This is an okay book. There’s no angst, the simple conflict coming from Stephen learning to not underestimate Jamie because he’s now in a wheelchair. Both Jamie and Stephen were BFFs until Stephen moved to California with his family, but now he’s returned to Boston to help his dad run a new business. A chance meeting has him running into Jamie again. The story is about Jamie having to prove to Stephen and his parents that he’s capable of looking after himself and yes he is interested in sex. Once Stephen is open to learning about Jamie’s disability then there isn’t much problem with their relationship. Most of the time Jamie spent wishing he could be Stephen’s boyfriend but isn’t sure if Stephen would consider it. Jamie’s sister has to keep pushing Jamie to talk to Stephen if he wants answers.
I like character-based stories, but this one was slow. Nothing much happens in the plot. Jamie is just a ray of sunshine and two dimensional. In fact, Jamie and Stephen both are. The story doesn’t go into depth about what makes them tick. We’re told by Jamie why and how he made himself optimistic again after the accident, but there are no feelings in it. He almost comes across as a Marty Stu. And Stephen never comes out and tells Jamie about his negative relationships with past boyfriends even though Jamie asks. That leaves Stephen two-dimensional because readers don’t get a feeling of who he is deep down. It’s surface stuff all told with no hooks that grab the feelings. I liked that the author wrote about someone with a disability and referenced some info during the sex scenes. The idea of Jamie’s book was interesting. I could see these two as a couple because they were kind of a couple long before they separated. But unfortunately, I didn’t feel their feelings so they didn’t make that much of an impression on me.
Overall, Sunshine and Shadows is an easy read. There really isn’t any big conflict and the pace is slow, which makes the story so even-keeled that I found it a bit boring. I give this book, 3 Stars.
