This was a good book. Too many characters and names to keep track of led it to fall short of being great for me.

The premise of the book is one I really was drawn to. It's 2016 and the palace is gearing up to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday, but she has more important and interesting things to do...namely solve the mystery surrounding the murder of a Russian artist at Windsor Castle.

Given the news swirling around the royal family recently, this felt very timely. The Queen needs to figure out who amongst her staff she can trust to help her. She has to navigate some secret channels to do the things she wants to.

I'm very appreciative to the publisher for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ( )

Meet the Queen of England, amateur detective, or “Miss Marple with a Crown” as the Daily Mail said. The first in a series of what I would call a “cozy castle mystery.” Cozy mysteries are not my cup of tea in mystery books, but despite no depth in character development it was still an engaging story as the Queen unravels the mysterious death of a visiting Russian dancer. I am giving it 4 stars for cozy mystery lovers, 3 stars for the rest of us. ( )

Queen Elizabeth, detective extraordinaire!

I had my doubts. I was sceptical. I wondered if the concept could ever get off the ground—HRH as a detective. Doubt no more, this idea was brilliantly orchestrated by Bennett.
Along the way one glimpses the intelligent compassion and understanding, the earthiness that has made Queen Elizabeth shine throughout her reign. Bennett has judged things to a nicety.
When a young Russian piano player is found dead in a guest room at Windsor, the head of the Queen’s Intelligence Service hares off in the wrong direction. It’s up to HRH to nudge him in the right direction after she’s co-opted the help of her private secretary’s (Sir Simon Holcroft) new assistant, Rozie Oshodi.
Humor, thoughtfulness, compassion and reality bump along together together to bring the mystery around to its conclusion with only a select few people knowing who’s putting two and two together and channeling the end game. I do like the portrayal of the relationship between the Queen and Prince Philip, BTW. The occasional references to knowledge acquired from her grandson’s is a hoot.
I went from suspended belief to relishing this really enjoyable mystery.
I wouldn’t know if Bennett has all her ducks in row about the inner workings of the Queen’s various households. It certainly appears that she’s a Royal watcher given the detail. I’m buying it all!
Clever dialogue, and a wonderful freshness makes this a delightful and intelligently written work.

Thanks to Book Club Girl Early Read Program & HarperCollins Publisher for a digital advance reader copy. All comments and opinions are my own.

This book was as intriguing as the description: Queen Elizabeth II solves a (multiple) murder mystery while continuing her official duties in 2016, just as she is about to celebrate her 90th birthday. Working surreptitiously with Rozie Oshodi, her newly hired personal secretary, who does the queen's investigative leg work, Her Majesty figures out the solution and subtly feeds her conclusions to the official police working on the case. So she never gets the credit for solving the murders, but of course doesn't need the praise - she's the queen, after all!

While the first murder occurs soon after the book begins, the novel takes a while to pick up speed. But stay with it because it's a worthwhile read with lots of clues and suspects, and the author capably wraps up the lose ends. I appreciate how she includes a touching and thoughtful ending demonstrating the queen's human kindness.

What I especially liked was the sophisticated perspective - the queen is portrayed respectfully and the book is written as a contemporary mystery, not light-hearted or silly. This novel included references to President & Mrs. Obama, Putin, Prince Phillip (QEII's husband) and other political figures as well as political issues of the time, which made it a realistic read. I admit it - I am a Royal Watcher! I was intrigued by the announcement of SJ Bennett's new series - Her Majesty the Queen Investigates. The first book is The Windsor Knot.

2016. Windsor Castle. A young Russian pianist who performed at a castle event is found dead the next morning - in the castle. MI5 suspects espionage and blames the Russians. As that avenue is pursued (by a self indulgent, aggrandizing agent) the Queen has her own suspicions and decides to steer the investigators onto a different line of inquiry. Without them knowing of course.

My first concern was how would the Queen be portrayed? Wonderfully is the answer! She is kind, gracious, wise, highly intelligent, well-spoken, observant, but imposing as well. Her inner dialogue is a treat to read and her sense of humor was spot on. Dry observations about her Royal family are a treat. The relationship between the Queen And Prince Phillip is lovely and loving. Indeed, there are many factual bits woven into Bennett's novel.

Okay, the logistics - how is the Queen going to be able to investigate? Rozie is the Queen's new Assistant Private Secretary. Don't let the high heels fool you - she has an admirable set of skills. The Queen sends Rozie out on errands and visits to those who might have an answer or insight to the Queen's questions and she reports back.

The mystery is well plotted and I really enjoyed following along. (And it's not so easy as the butler did it) I liked the setting as well - who doesn't want to know what the inside and daily life of the castle is like? But, bottom line, it's the great characters that drive this series.

This was such a fun, clever and thoroughly enjoyable listen for me. The reader was Jane Copland. Her voice was perfect - with a rich, cultured tone that's quite pleasant to listen to and an accent that immediately brought the Queen to mind. The pace of the reading is just right as well - never rushed. Keep calm and carry on! The subtle changes in intonation and emphasis are perfect for the Queen's manner. The unwitting (that MI5 agent) won't pick up on it, but the listener will. Different voices are provided for other characters and suit as well - a Russian national, Phillip and more - all believable. Her speaking flows very naturally.

I'm looking forward to the next in this series! (And a wee bit of me wonders if the Queen would ever pick up this book for a wee peek?) ( )
