I rarely review poetry. Poems are such personal contraptions that affect one reader intensely and not at all for another. But I’d venture to say Silence of Islands’ sentiments are largely universal—expressing the blessings of life and the stealthiness of death. Words that evoke sorrow, joy, nostalgia, and a wealth of other heart sensations.

The author has a clear writer’s voice. There’s nothing presumptuous or inflated in these poems. They’re candid and simple. Quaint, yet profound. Freeing, yet captivating.

I really enjoyed this book of predominantly free-verse poems. There’s a rhyme or two, but the majority of pages present simplistic, easy-to-decipher, free style writings.

The most poignant works, and the easiest for me to connect with, were the ‘father’ poems (especially one titled, What Luck.) Another notable piece was Better Them Than Us, in which a shirt and sweater convey a progression of love.

A beautiful book of emotion and artistry.
