I’m not spoiling anything by telling you that a woman kills her husband, waits for the body to be discovered, but then it disappears and she has no idea where it went. Lots of suspects and lots of ways that this story gets told including flashbacks and podcasts and following the same clues as the detective on the case. I thought this was really well done ( )

So I ended the year with a book bang, and I just started the year with a book bang. Hopefully a good sign for the whole year. One can hope, right?

I do not know anything about Darby Kane. I do not know if she has any other books out and if so, I have obviously not read them. Or if I have, I’m not aware of reading it offhand.

Lila is married to Aaron, but she discovers a devastating secret about him and it’s something she cannot ignore. In her mind, there is only one solution. She has everything planned down to the minute, as that is the type of woman she is. But within hours, she realizes that something has gone terribly wrong and she has no clue about the how, who, or what in the situation. She does not like to find herself involved in a situation that she does not have complete control over.

As Aaron’s disappearance is investigated, we learn much about Lila, her past and her relationships. Typically things are not always as they appear which is obviously the case here. As the story unfolds, there are quite a few shocking reveals. I was actually a bit surprised by the twist at the end of the book. Although it was something I suspected a few times, I always found myself veering away from that possibility.

I’m not sure this book will be for everybody. There are some very sensitive subjects touched upon throughout the book and many readers may find themselves bothered by this. ( )

I started to love this story from early on, with the internal monologue of the main character, Lila Ridgefield. A housewife stuck in an unhappy marriage, to a philanderer who sounds like a real peach. This story excels at grabbing and holding attention. I sped right through it. It does have a way of sneaking up and surprising you. Early on the perception is that the main storyline will revolve around an investigation into Lila’s husband vanishing into thin air, with Lila front and center as a viable suspect. It evolves so much further beyond that. I didn’t realize this was a debut novel until I read that in the Goodreads description, so I was a little surprised. This is a strong showing as a debut. If I have one small criticism, it is that some of the intersecting storylines and characters are introduced without much background, so it does feel a little disorganized, but it doesn’t really hurt the story overall. Thank you to Netgalley for the copy in exchange for an honest review. ( )

I enjoy domestic suspense novels - they're usually fully stocked with twists and turns. And I do quite enjoy a good twisty tale. Killing your husband and then having the body disappear was a good starting point! Lila of course is a 'person of interest' in her husband's disappearance. Kane gives us other suspects to consider along the way, but Lila seems to be the most likely culprit. Proving that though, will take some work. The cat and mouse game between Lila and the lead detective, Ginny, was probably the part I enjoyed the most. The reader is privy to Lila's thoughts and secrets as well as how the police investigation is progressing. I did find I confused two of those other suspects along the way as they seemed very similar to me. There's also an investigation by a podcast team into the disappearance of other women. So...lots going on in this town!

I chose to listen to Pretty Little Wife. The reader was Xe Sands - she's a favorite of mine. She was the perfect choice to read this book. She has a measured way of speaking, paced to capture the nuances of the plot and the character speaking. Different voices are used and are easy to differentiate. The male voices employed a lower, gravelly tone that was believable. She enunciates well, reads at the right speed and is pleasant to listen to. But it's the pauses and inflections that really make her one reader I love to listen to. Hear for yourself - here's an audio excerpt of Pretty Little Wife.

I enjoyed this book, but Kane lost a star as later revelations seem tawdry and a bit over the top. (Gentle readers, this is a good time to mention there are some triggers in this plot) But overall it was a good listen as I quilted away on some snowy days. ( )

The inscrutable Lila Ridgefield is uncharacteristically furious with her husband when she gets a glimpse of his secret life in Pretty Little Wife by Darby Kane. Kane is a pseudonym for a well-established romance author, but there is little sentiment to be found in this departure toward domestic thrillers. Lila is cold, clever and resourceful. Her character has been formed from a traumatic past that molded her into a pragmatic creature who makes decisions based on calculation rather than emotion. Even her marriage is one of convenience and functions by the maintenance of respectful distance. It is an arrangement that suits her needs, but Lila soon discovers how it also serves her husband, Aaron, as well. Their lack of connection allows him to engage in some heinous activities while maintaining the facade of a perfect husband and teacher. When Aaron goes missing, Lila is naturally the prime suspect. She is baffled as well, since she thought she had set up the perfect suicide scene for him when she killed him. This is all revealed at the start of the novel, which then pivots to the mystery of Aaron’s whereabouts and the clues left behind in taunting messages left for Lila. Ginny is the detective assigned to the case, and she is not fooled by Lila’s demeanor and unflappability. As a former lawyer, Lila knows and manipulates the system well, but Ginny uses her instincts to bore through Lila’s story. As Aarons misdeeds are exposed, his brother (Jared) and Lila’s former colleague (Tobias) come to protect Lila, but this is a woman who does not need rescuing. Hitting on themes of misogyny, teen exploitation, sociopathic tendencies and vigilantism, Pretty Little Wife takes a decidedly feminist view. While its male characters are either ineffectual or banally inhuman, the female characters are finely tuned and nuanced. Lila is someone who should wisely be both admired and feared, and Ginny is her match in intelligence and provides ethical insight and perspective. Kane has done an admirable job here, producing a novel of suspense that is nicely paced and unpredictable. Her existing followers and new admirers will also be glad to know that she has another upcoming novel, The Replacement Wife, expected to release by the end of 2021.

Thanks to the author,William Morrow and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an impartial review. ( )
