This was definitely leaning towards the mystery side rather than spooky as Andy Weir takes us on another interstellar adventure with an erstwhile hero, middle school science teacher Ryland Grace, and his alien sidekick Rocky. I read until I couldn't keep my eyes open on Wednesday night then settled in the next morning. The book moves between present and past with Ryland struggling to survive even as his memory returns of the events leading up to the present. And it easily filled in the Bingo card about a STEM related topic: there was science, technology, engineering and lots and lots of math. I listened to this on audiobook and the narrator was absolutely amazing. The story however, maybe I wasn't smart enough for this book? I got really lost in all the science of it. The overall story was great and I loved the relationship between the main character and Rocky and how they learned to communicate. I was really sucked in at the beginning too. But the science stuff was over my head. Some would've been great, but it was a lot in my mind. But maybe because this isn't my typical genre that it went over my head. Overall, it's a great story, and if you love books with lots of science, I can see this being a favorite read, but it wasn't for me. I really, truly tried to keep reading this book but I just couldn't do it. I got up to about page 187 and had to call it a day. If you are a science nerd, love all of the numbers, scientific mumbo jumbo, etc., then this is the book for you. The author went on and on with the scientific terms and vocabulary so much so that I became numb and totally uninterested. As as far as the story goes, to me it sounded like a rehash of The Martian, except this guy is alone on a spaceship versus being alone on Mars. He needs to figure where he is, how to interact with the (supposed) alien encounter he has, all the while trying to figure out how to get some space goo back to some sun-like star in a different solar system. When I find myself looking ahead 75, 125, 200 pages to see if the format and dialogue are the same, then I know I am starting to lose interest. I started doing this around page 150. I thumbed through the book and the main character was still rambling on using the same scientific terms and descriptions he was doing on page 150. At approximately 480 pages, I simply couldn't subject myself to another 300 pages of this. Sorry, I really wanted to rea dit but I couldn't do it. Sisältyy tähän:PalkinnotDistinctionsNotable Lists
