Bess Beringer has a brand-new job with the legendary sports agency Kassman and Associates. She’s taken this job to be close to her brother, Dave. But their respective careers often keep them separated, and Dave is unhappy that he’s not able to spend Bess’s birthday with her.
But when her boss finds out about her upcoming birthday, he invites her to join him at an upcoming welcoming dinner for three rookies. Bess accepts . . . and when she meets Mark, sparks fly.
This short story, part of the author’s Brooklyn Bruisers series, serves as a prequel to “Sure Shot,” which takes place nine years after this story. “Lucky Shot” tells how Bess and Mark, both at the beginning of their careers, met and had a brief relationship.
The story, told from Bess’s point of view, is a quick, steamy introduction to Bess and Mark, but it offers only a quick view of Bess at work at the sports agency and the dinner where she meets Mark. The story moves quickly and doesn’t give readers an opportunity to connect with the characters.
Ending on a cliffhanger of sorts, readers will not find out what happens following their one night together unless they read “Sure Shot.” But for readers anxious to learn where their relationship has taken them nine years later . . . . ( )
