This is the first graphic novel for illustrator Tim Probert. Bea lives with her wise Pig wizard grandfather who adopted her when she was little. They live in the Salty Pig’s Tonics and Tinctures house where Bea helps collect ingredients for the medicines and potions. On one of her trips she meets Cad. He is a member of the Galdurians. Cad is looking for his missing people because he believes Galdurians are not extinct. This is the day her grandfather leaves to check the Seal of the Restless Sleeper. Cad will help Bea find her grandfather and that is where their adventure begins. The journey also makes her realize why her grandfather told her to carry The Jar of Endless Flame with her at all times and keep it safe. Bea is not your typical adventurist; she is insecure and although knows a lot about potions, likes to stay in her comfort zone but the safety of her grandfather is more important and shows that she has strengths she did not know she had. This colorful imaginary world will draw in younger fans of the Amulet series. An open ending will have kids wanting to read the next book.

I purchased this book solely on the wonderful light in the illustrations. The character of Cad is refreshingly humorous and charming, as well as good with a sword. The girl, Bea (spoiler) suffers from anxiety, which is creatively expressed as waving black lines around her body when she is starting to feel overwhelmed. I felt this worked very well and I know children who will read this and find this resonates with them.
I loved being dropped into a world where things are quite different, without any explanation (many characters are animals; there is a bit of backstory told by Cad some way into the story).
There is nothing particularly novel about the story (fantasy quest), but the different characters met along the way are fun and there are laugh out loud moments (fire, cat, say no more). I really enjoyed reading this and I'm very much looking forward to reading the next one. I am going to buy myself a copy now. ( )

Series Info/Source: This is the first book in the Lightfall series. I bought a copy of this book for my son for Christmas.

Story (5/5): Bea lives with the Pig Wizard and works as his apprentice. When she goes out hunting herbs one day she meets Cad, a member of the Galdurian race. The two return to Bea’s home to find the Pig Wizard missing. Bea sets off (with Cad’s help) to find the Pig Wizard and with her she carries the precious Jar of Endless Flame. This was a wonderful fantasy adventure story with some intriguing magic and a lush history. I really loved everything about it, it was such a fun and engaging read.

Characters (5/5): I loved the characters here. Bea has a bit of an anxiety issue but doesn’t let it get in the way of trying to find her adopted grandfather. Cad comes off as very happy-go-lucky but has a lot more depth to him than you initially see. The two run across a number of quirky characters on their journey who were a lot of fun to read about.

Setting (5/5): This was an interesting fantasy world where the world is split into light and dark regions. The light regions are lit up by giant mechanical lights that were originally developed by the Galdurians. It’s a well developed world and beautifully portrayed by the illustrations throughout, I really loved it.

Writing/Drawing Style (5/5): The illustration throughout is beautifully done. This is a bit more cartoony in style and done in full lush color. The drawings were detailed and easy to follow. I loved the world-building, the characters, and the adventure. This was all in all incredibly well done.

My Summary (5/5): Overall I enjoyed this immensely and think this is one of those rare middle grade fantasy graphic novel series that kids and adults will enjoy equally. If you are a fan of Kibuishi’s Amulet series or of the Smith’s Bone series you should check this series out. I can’t wait to read the second volume! ( )

The art is gorgeous! I like the characters too. The story was alright but reading it was really nice. ( )

Wow, just wow. This book was so much fun. The girl is Bea, and she is an anxious little girl who takes on an unwanted quest to find her grandfather the “pig wizard”. Before her adventure gets started she meets Cab the last Galdurian. There are many aspects of this book that remind me of the Dark Crystal, and that is a complement. It’s its own story and not a retelling but it feels like a homage to one of my favorite stories and I loved it all the more for it. The art work is great, the story is meaningful and approachable for any age. I hope the series is completed before someone like Netflix grabs it up for an animated series.
