Using her own life as a starting point, Rachel looks at the issues that arise for a woman in the years after she has lived the defining experiences of feminity. She writes about marriage, separation, motherhood, work, money, domesticity and love. Cusk considers the kinds of generational knowledge the contemporary woman harbours, the terrors or expectations that have been passed down to her and that are refracted through the modern transformation of female status. Aftermath is written in the personal/political mode that characterised A Life's Work, Cusk's acclaimed book about becoming a mother.…

After the Outline Trilogy, this was a very big disappointment. Way too intellectual, boring, impersonal. ( )

I seem drawn to these quiet little books about relationships. [b:On Chesil Beach|815309|On Chesil Beach|Ian McEwan|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1436962381s/815309.jpg|1698999]. It doesn't seem to matter whether the relationship is healthy or unhealthy; I'm just curious about the individual dynamics.

Quit on page 46. Maybe I’m too busy, but I just can’t care enough to get into the dwelling, the wallowing, the digressing. I don’t even know how unfair I’m being right now; it didn’t even sink in enough for that.

Zeus has led us on to know,
The Helmsman lays it down as law
That we must suffer, suffer into truth.
We cannot sleep, and drop by drop at the heart
the pain of pain remembered comes again,
and we resist, but ripeness comes as well.
From the gods enthroned on the awsome rowing-bench
there comes a violent love.
