I was excited to listen to the 'Stolen Prophet' as an audiobook, as I typically enjoy supernatural themed books. While I enjoyed the first part of the book, I ultimately found that I lost track of the storyline, as the plot seemed to jump back and forth quite a bit. I'm not sure if it is just the audio version that does not transition well between characters. The author, Coleman works to incorporate thoughts and impressions from a multitude of characters (eg. Evelyn, Hank), which at times adds to the story, but often confuses the plot so that the reader almost forgets what the primary storyline is. Ultimately, Stolen Prophet was not my favourite. I wish the author had focused on Evelyn, her son, and getting him back; I think I would have enjoyed that more. ( )

Coleman presents an alternate creation myth complete with deities who influence the lives of the human characters in modern society. The characters have dimension and clarity and the narrative gradually exposes facets of their histories and personalities. I felt that the development of the spiritual characters and their relationship with the human people did not have enough depth for the reader to invest in that alternate “reality” and understand the actions and emotions of the characters. As a result, this interferes with a strong connection between the reader and the story.
Errors in pronunciation by the narrator tend to distract from the atmosphere of the story.

A quick supernatural read. I enjoyed this book at the beginning despite some odd time jumps and missing information. Around chapter 7 that changed though and I lost interest more and more. Because the story switches to other character points of views I was not absorbed by the story. It also becomes vulgar at that point which feels out of place. So, it is best listened to with headphones. All the new character introductions and their commentary and inner thoughts throughout the story felt tedious and wandering. Some of the cops inner monologue seemed gruesome and unrelated to the main story. I wish the story had stayed with the beginning characters and stuck to the plot more. I appreciate the alternative views for a fuller experience but I would have liked significantly less side stories. Sometimes I forgot what I was reading because it was so wandering. By the end I felt disconnected from the story and characters. The beginning characters have a special unique religion and secret powers that are passed down from generation to generation. However because one killed their child the family became cursed. So now the child must sacrifice their parent when they become of age. They cannot share the power due to the curse. They were all female until the first character in the book ( there are no clear main characters) attempts to kill her self versus killing her mother. There was limited details on what happened other than she jumped from a window. Next she is suddenly grown and has a son who is taken/ disappears. Then the story becomes more of a dark detective cop story at that point. I am an American female and often find it hard to listen to female narrator's with American accents. However, I did enjoy this narrator they were clear and easy to understand and read at a quick pace. But they didn't have enough distinction between character voices. ( )

There were some very interesting and engaging ideas, plot points, and characters in this, but the whole story felt very disjointed by following so many different characters, offering long expositions on all of them that often even included unnecessary sexual content, but never really getting to the meat of story for long, or even connecting all of the concepts presented. I was given a free copy of the audiobook through LibraryThing to listen to and give an honest review.

Despite (for me anyway) a bit of a confusing beginning, I enjoyed this paranormal murder mystery very much. The last couple of minutes brought it all together in the version of the audio book I listened to. I think the next installment will answer more questions for me. Evelyn is part of a clan that in order to pass down power from one generation to the next must kill her maternal parent when she has her first mense. Evelyn does not in any way shape or form want to so this and entreats her father to intervene. Her mother has decreed he shall not. Years later Evelyn, now Evie, has a young son named Victor. We do not know anything about his father, he is a mystery. Victor has started to show signs of great power and when he is kidnapped for this gift he has his mother unleashes her suppressed power to try to find him. She will stop at nothing to save her son. Detective Harry K enters the picture and things go all kinds of weird from here on. I'm looking forward to the next installment in this series. Recommended for fans of supernatural fiction. ***.5 stars ( )
