First of all, I'm glad I decided to re-read the series before starting this book because I wouldn't have been able to follow anything at all. So, fair warning - literally every main character (and a few side characters) from the rest of the series shows up in it, and a lot of plots and side plots from previous books tie in here.

The whole story had a kind of an Avengers assemble vibe that I liked very much. The thing I most looked forward to was Devlin and Chris meeting. I was waiting for it to happen from the moment I realized they had the same last name and were probably related. But when it finally happened here, it was so brief that I wanted to take away a star from my rating just for that. On the bright side, Megan Derr said in the afterword there will be more short stories set in the universe so I hope we'll at least get a glimpse of Chris and Devlin when they actually sit and talk properly.

Another thing that bothered me was the way the whole plot was so simplistically resolved after having such a complicated beginning. I mean, the Kings were framed as a force to be reckoned with. They were cunning, meticulous, and had been planning this scheme for an extremely long time. More than half of the book we are shown over and over again that they are a step (or several) ahead of our MCs. And they ended up being defeated by a gang of half-organized and severely depleted paranormals, one sorcerer who MacGyvered them from the inside, and one furious demon king who managed to... drive the main baddie mad? It was just so underwhelming.

In all I'm glad I read this book, but I'm really hoping for some of those short stories soon. ( )
