This book yall. It was so good! A family saga set in Uganda during challenging times of change and Kirabo is learning to live in it.

This is a long book, but it has to be. There are several generations and connections of families that echo each other in different times, it explores traditions of Ugandan families and how education women challenges those traditions. Well worth the time it takes to read! ( )

First thanks to the Book Browse group for providing an advanced copy of "A Girl is a Body of
Water." Here is my review first posted on Book Browse First Impressions.

I would prefer to give this 3.5 stars because parts of "A Girl..." could use some heavy editing. I found the first part to be very slow. I actually put the book down for a few weeks. I picked it up again about a week ago and flew through the last part. Here is a list of favorite and not so favorite parts:
Favorites;
1. The characters of Kirabo, Sio (yes he redeems himself in the end), Atim (Kirabo's friend from St. Theresa's), Nsuuta, Alikisa (Grandmother), all of the Aunts and Grandfather Miiro.
2. The final scene of Alikisa and Nsuuta - naked bathing in the rain - so beautiful and poignant and ties everything together.
3. The parts where Kirabo was at St. Theresa's - wished that she continued with University - perhaps another book
Less than favorites:
1. The stepmother Nnambi and her sister - felt contrived and overwrought - also did not understand certain decisions the sister made.
2. I understand why the friendship between Giibwa and Kirabo disintegrated but not sure why the other element was introduced - the friendship would have ended without that. Again, I don't want to spoil plots.
3. Kirabo's father's story Arc went on for a bit longer than necessary - sharper editing would have helped.
My overwhelming opinion of this book is that the last 350 pages where beautifully written and took me away to Uganda in the mid 1980s and beyond. That is no mean feat during these trying times so I applaud the author for accomplishing that feat. I look forward to her next book and perhaps she will continue the story of Kirabo. ( )

A Girl is a Body of Water by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi is the story of many women in a patriarchal, male dominated society. One main reason for my choosing this book is its setting in Uganda. Diversity and representation in literature matters, and I find fiction an introduction to worlds I know nothing about. The main theme of the book comes together, but perhaps fewer characters and greater depth to each would have created a story that resonated more emotionally.

A large, raucous story. A jacket blurb describes it as 'a luminous and sprawling bildungsroman' and I definitely agree.

A Ugandan girl coming of age in the 70s explores the world and echoes of the past around her as she charts her course.

This is another book I would have never have found or explored if it wasn't an Indiespensable volume. ( )

“Columns of rainwater, formed by the corrugated iron roof, fell like lines of colourless strings.”

This coming of age novel is a sweeping and powerful portrait of a young girl and her family, who they are, what history has taken from them, and most importantly, how they find their way back to each other. The story transitioned from Kirabo’s life in Ugandan village of Nattetta, Eastern Africa. then the story switches to epistolary form and tells the story of Mirro, Nsuuta and Alikisa in earlier years, 1930-1940’s In Uganda and how the Europeans changed time, arranged marriages. The novel touches on wealth, manipulation of the female genitalia, and Girls who excelled in math, science and physics were looked upon as intersexual freaks because it was a masculine discipline.

I appreciated the short history of the Gods or Goddesses of Water mentioned in the story, such as Ursula Yemaya (water deity from the Yoruba religion. I also paused my reading to do a little research on Idi Amin Dada Oumee, the 3rd President of Uganda (1971-1979). Considered one of the cruelest deposts in world history. His portrait hangs on the wall of a shop within the story.

The novel was very hard to read with a lot of referencing to Uganda customs, dialog, regions and terminology. But pushing past that, it was a mystical story, a mirror into the feminist views from 1970s, 80s Uganda. I enjoyed the historical fiction aspect of the novel. The writing was very descriptive and characters were well developed. Overall the story was well defined and rendered a great read. ( )
