"A young woman discovers a strange portal in her uncle's house, leading to madness and terror in this gripping new novel from the author of the "innovative, unexpected, and absolutely chilling" (Mira Grant, Nebula Award-winning author) The Twisted Ones. Pray they are hungry. Kara finds the words in the mysterious bunker that she's discovered behind a hole in the wall of her uncle's house. Freshly divorced and living back at home, Kara now becomes obsessed with these cryptic words and starts exploring this peculiar area-only to discover that it holds portals to countless alternate realities. But these places are haunted by creatures that seem to hear thoughts...and the more one fears them, the stronger they become. With her distinctive "delightfully fresh and subversive" (SF Bluestocking) prose and the strange, sinister wonder found in Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, The Hollow Places is another compelling and white-knuckled horror novel that you won't be able to put down"--… (lisätietoja)

3.5 stars, rounded down

hmmm, not really sure what to say about this…the good parts were interesting, but the not-so-good parts were pretty boring. i am glad i read this, but i won’t be rereading. if it’s worth anything, this is the first time i’ve given a book half a star.. ( )

Kara moves into her Uncle's museum following her divorce. She discovers a hole in the wall, which leads to another dimension, full of horrific creatures and dangers. This place is full of doorways, leading to different worlds. When Kara and her friend Simon venture into this place, they have a hard time finding the correct doorway back home, while trying to avoid the monsters looking for them.

I loved the descriptions of the museum, and all the weird and unusual objects in it. The scenes in the museum were my favorite. The times in the alternate dimension went on a little too long for me. I really enjoyed the ending. The efforts to close the doorway was exciting and fun to read. The conversations between Kara and Simon are full of snarky humor which I enjoyed. I recommend this book.

I received a free copy of this book via a goodreads giveaway. ( )

I don't do horror books/movies of any kind, but I really wanted to read a T. Kingfisher novel and the reviews convinced me to take a chance on this one.

What a great ride! Scaring the pants off myself - soooo creepy, but in a weirdly delicious way- and unable to put it down. The humor/snark is endlessly delightful. It's pretty funny to find yourself shouting at the characters "NOOOOO, don't you know no good can come from doing that!" -- and then the character agrees with you. The setting of the taxidermy Museum of Wonders is just ... so good. ( )

Adrift after her divorce, 34-year-old Kara returns to the Hog Chapel, N.C. and her parents' home, which is the last place that she dreamed of returning to. When her obliging uncle offered her an alternative residence if she would work with him at his museum, the Glory to God Museum of Natural Wonders, Curiosities and Taxidermy, she jumped at the opportunity. Shortly after beginning working at the Wonder Museum, her uncle informed her that he would be away for some time for knee surgery and rehab and asked if she would be the sole proprietor for a few weeks. While creating an inventory of the museum oddities, she discovers a hole in the back wall. Requesting the assistance of Simon, a barista employed at a coffee shop next door, they decide to patch the sheetrock. During the repair, the two discover an unknown corridor behind the museum and decide investigate. As the two walk the dark corridor they discover that the distance travel transcends the building that the coffee shop and museum inhabit. The corridor ends with a concrete bunker which exits into a river world populated by a series of gravel-beached islands, many with additional bunkers and whispering willow trees.

Simon and Kara decide to explore their new environs. Since what they encounter would be a spoiler, I won't go any further except to say that they do safely return home. However, what they discovered now wants to enter their world. Simon frequently uses C.S. Lewis's Narnia portals when describing this alien world; however, this would only be an accurate description if H.P. Lovecraft was the architect.

I listened to this book narrated on an audiobook. The primary characters seemed more juvenile than there given ages. I may have had a different opinion if I had read it. I didn't believe that it was the best writing however I did find it entertaining. Although at times, the adventures into this alien world when Kara was being chased by "ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggedy beasties" became tedious and boring. ( )

A spot or two of real horror. Uncomfortable, to say the least, trees, worse than Snow White's flee through the night woods. ( )
