Finding Love on T.V.

To be honest from the get-go, the closest some of us have come to watching a reality dating show is having watched UnReal. (You can find it on a variety of streaming services, and it comes highly recommended, especially Season 1). Those suspicious of what transpires behind the scenes and in the producer meetings will be a bit disappointed with this dating show novel wherein Lauren can’t hold a candle to Quinn in the various departments of manipulation, sleeping around, and untrustworthiness. Here, the biggest bomb thrower is the “Main Squeeze” queen seeking love, or maybe just a little acceptance not based on physical appearance, is Bea Schumacher herself. Putting aside the message of the novel regarding the challenges facing plus-size women throughout the Western world, the main arc of the novel revolves around Bea battling her insecurities about her weight, insecurities that blind her to what a wonderful and accomplished person she is. For Bea, all ends happily, both in the love and self-actualization, and in that regard the novel and reality show deliver the Cinderella ending (though not in exactly the way you may expect).

Having said this, readers will enjoy taking the journey with Bea and meeting the men Lauren, the producer, has chosen for her. You travel along as Bea tries to discern which of the men is being truthful with her, seeing past her weight to the person she really is. Bea can be quite engaging, especially when she draws the men out, for this brigade of beefcake all labor under the weight of their own issues, except maybe for Luc, the French chef, who leads the life of which male dreams are made. Bea also can be very annoying because she can’t ever seem to get past her personal hurt, inflicted upon herself as she has spent years being manipulated by the man she fantasizes loving, Ray. Hiss and boo, he strings her along for nearly a decade before getting engaged to another woman. And still she uses him as her yardstick when measuring her court of beef. The only man worst than Ray in this novel is Jefferson, but for a different reason. Just when Bea begins feeling a bit comfortable with the men, with the idea they just might like her, Jefferson figuratively slaps her back and forth in a vicious way you might expect in a locker room of high school boys. It’s the moment you’re waiting for, the harsh reality, but it passes as the other men demonstrate what Prince Valiants they can be, and that real men can see past the merely physical. Color many of us skeptical.

Bottom line here: engaging and enjoyable, thoughtful in many places, filled with hope, but, unfortunately, as unrealistic as a T.V. dating show.

A very enjoyable read with an appealing protagonist and interesting insights on the challenges of being a plus-size blogger searching for love. I'll watch for more from this author. ( )

This was fun. Not at all my usual choice of genre. I read it in 2 days, as it's extremely light reading. I did have to skim the repetitive episodes of self-doubt from the heroine, but it was still lots of fun. ( )
