McKenzie Strikes Again. I first began reading McKenzie a couple of years ago with The Good Liar, and she continues to amaze me with the stories she is able to craft. There's all kinds of things going on here. We've got discussions of images and cancel culture. We've got discussions of plagiarism and cults. We've got ... other things that would be a spoiler to reveal. All in a fairly taut mystery with enough action to be awesome. Oh, and absolutely do not read the end first or you'll spoil everything, moreso than in most books. Very much recommended. ( )

The Short of It:

If you enjoy cat and mouse type games, then this might be a good one for you. Not sure I was in the right mood to read it.

The Rest of It:

Jessica Williams escaped a cult more than a decade ago. She attributes her rescue to a detective with whom she still keeps in contact with. This is convenient because at an airport bar, while waiting for her flight, a young woman sits next to Jessica and asks her if she wants to play a game. Why not? Enjoy a few drinks, a little bit of banter. Whatever helps the time pass.

Except, this young woman is also named Jessica Williams and shares the same birth date as Jessica #1. Weird, right? Once they finish their drinks and part ways, Jessica #1 quickly learns that all her money has been taken from her bank accounts. That game that they played pretty much told Jessica #2, everything she needed to know to go online and wipe her out.

When Jessica #1 shares this information with her long-time detective friend, they decide to go after her and find that she’s left other victims in her wake.

This story was just too convenient all around. No one would be that gullible. Okay, Jessica #1 was in a cult once so perhaps she was the level of gullible needed to play a 20 questions like game that pretty much tells the world who you are. But it seemed all together too easy.

There is a lot of chasing fake Jessica around. I quickly tired of this because I just didn’t buy the story as a whole. It wasn’t suspenseful in the way I expected it to be. Overall, it was disappointing. Instead, I recommend her other book, Fractured.

Every now and then we have the pleasure of reading a book that totally captivates and surprises. You Can’t Catch Me by Catherine McKenzie is that book. Jessica Williams was raised in a cult and was rescued twelve years ago. She rebuilt her life and all was well until a chance encounter at the airport. She was approached by a stranger who turned out to share her name and birthday. The two enjoyed a few drinks and discussed the serendipity. Within days, it became clear that the woman had stolen her personal information and all of her money in her bank account. She eventually put a plan in place to contact other Jessicas to see if the same crime had been committed. And she was right. With their help, she set in motion a plan to set a trap for the criminal. You will need to read You Can’t Catch Me to find out how the story evolves. If you like your mysteries unpredictable, you will love this book. Highly recommended. Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. ( )

YOU CAN'T CATCH ME is a novel that is easy to put down, although most of the story is engaging if you accept an unlikely premise.

Jessica Williams is a common name, and this story has five of them or so it seems. And one of the Jessicas is trying to scam the others.

Another one of the Jessicas ("Jessica 1") tries to catch the bad Jessica ("Jessica 2"). But Jessica 1 tells lots of lies to her lover, Liam, who saved her once and could and would save her again if she would tell him the truth. We learn in the end that she has not been telling us the whole story, either.

And what a disappointment the end is! It seems to me a lazy way to tell a story.

I won this book through http://www.chicklitcentral.com/. ( )

This is another great thriller from Catherine McKenzie. Once you read the first page you enter into a roller coaster ride with lots of twists and turns along the way. Just when you think you have everything figured out, she throws in another twist and you realize you were wrong - very wrong. I didn't figure this one out until the bomb shell was released near the end.

Jessica escaped from a cult and Liam helped her re-enter real life again. He remains one of the most important people in her life and reluctantly agrees to help her - but her plans go way beyond his comfort zone. As the book begins, she has just lost her job as a reporter for plagiarism. She is sitting in an airport bar waiting for a flight to Mexico for a vacation hoping that the stories about her will disappear by the time she gets back. Imagine her surprise when she finds out the woman next to her has the exact same name and birthday as she does. They play 20 questions to look for other similarities in their lives and talk about where they grew up, their mother's maiden names etc. Imagine the surprise when Jessica gets back from a week with no social media and finds out that all of her money has been withdrawn from her account. She suspects who did it but can't get help from the bank or the police so she starts trying to solve the problem on her own. She begins to look for other women with the same name and finds several who have also been conned by the same person who stole her money. She and the other Jessicas set a trap to catch the thief. But how far will she go to get revenge? The results may surprise you but it all made sense in the context of the novel.

This is a fantastic thriller that will keep you up late into the night while you quickly turn the pages to find out if Jessica succeeds with her clever cat and mouse game to catch the thief. ( )
