Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for this ARC!!

Liz sees her best friend Jess as a stay-at-home mother-of-three with boundless reserves of patience, energy, and love. But when Jess, arrives at the hospital, where Liz works as a nurse, with her young daughter she begins to wonder what's wrong with Jess.

Jess’s daughter, Betsey, has suffered a head trauma, but what is even more perplexing to Liz, is Jess’s lack of concern about the situation. Why didn’t Jess rush her daughter to the hospital when the accident first happened? How did it happen? Something about the way Jess keeps avoiding Liz's questions surprises her and she wonders what is Jess hiding?

Dark thoughts and carefully guarded secrets surface—and Liz is left questioning everything she thought she knew about her friend, and about herself. The truth can’t come soon enough.

I really enjoyed reading this and the ending was surprising since I didn't expect it !! ( )

This was such a difficult book to read. It is compelling and emotional and hit all the sensitive nerves in me. The book hit home with me and I could relate to so much here.
Motherhood is hard. It is unquestionably one of the hardest things you can ever do but it is also rewarding (ignore the teenage years please. It is supposed to get better lol).
Jess, Liz, Charlotte, and Mel became friends after connecting through prenatal class. Liz is surprised when Jess shows up in the emergency room with her baby who has a severe head injury. The explanation Jess gives doesn't make sense so Liz reluctantly agrees with her supervisor to call in the police and social service to open an investigation to find out what really did happen.
As I said, this really hit home. My first baby was "easy" considering I had never been the sole caregiver of a baby before. I was impressed by Sarah Vaughan's description of all the fears of new motherhood. I never developed a fear of harming my baby but did imagine all the possible things that could potentially hurt her but not to the point depicted in the book. It was more baby gates and covering outlets aside from making my landlord make a higher barrier at the top side of the stairs. She was a newborn and I was already picturing her upstairs and tumbling over the side. My son was another matter. He was colicky and I remember how helpless I felt. I always felt so terrible for him and blamed myself for being unable to calm him down and help him. I think it made a difference realizing that he was just trying to communicate and I was unable to understand (the solution was letting him watch candy crush). It is definitely overwhelming when you have more than one young child to look after.
The difference in the book is it deals with being too overwhelmed, being afraid to ask for help, and putting pressure on yourself to be the perfect mother. An added problem is PPD and PPP.
The book is very emotional and realistic. There are so many twists and turns and side plots to keep you interested to the very end. It is obvious that the author did a lot of research for this book. There could be personal experience as well but the degree of detail on physical injuries and psychological issues not to mention hospital protocol to appreciate the effort Sarah Vaughn put in. ( )

Little Disasters is a contemporary novel about what happens when a child is injured and abuse is expected. Lisa is a pediatrician called to the Emergency Room when a child’s injuries invite suspicion. She is shocked to discover she knows the family. In fact, Jess is a good friend, part of a circle of women who bonded in pre-natal classes when they all had their first child.

Of course, child services must be called in to investigate and Lisa’s boss must take over the medical treatment. Lisa feels in a bind, thinking her friend Jess could not possibly be abusive, but certain she is hiding something. The story changes point of view between Lisa, Jess, and Jess’ husband as they all come reluctantly to suspect Jess. But the truth is more complicated than it seems.

Little Disasters effectively grabbed my attention and held on for dear life. I read it one sitting and it has its surprises. In fact, after you think it’s been solved and you know what happened, there is a wrench thrown in the plot, shifting it to a far more sinister story. I somehow think an opportunity was lost here.

This story reminds me of when a woman in a nearby suburb fell asleep while her children were napping. They woke up before her, found a lighter, and set the house on fire. They died. I heard women on the bus discussing whether or not the woman will be charged with murder or manslaughter and they were all for giving her the death penalty. I wondered what happened to accidents?

I received an e-galley of Little Disasters from the publisher through NetGalley.

"Is parenthood meant to be this bleak?"

Little Disasters is a fast-paced domestic drama about a group of women (Jess, Liz, Mel and Charlotte) who meet in a pre-natal class and become friends as they ago through the trials of birth and motherhood together. A decade later, Jess's young daughter, Betsey, ends up in the hospital with a suspicious skull fracture and Liz is the on-call pediatrician who treats her at the ER. When troubling details about the injury emerge, Liz starts to question everything she knows not only about her friend but also herself, and the truth of what really happened could either save or ruin them both.

"This is what being a mother is all about... Letting your children take little steps until they abandon you completely and you are left quite alone."

The mystery of what happened to baby Betsy kept me guessing and there are a few twists along the way I didn't see coming but what I liked most about this book was the way Vaughan depicts motherhood. All of the characters struggle in some way with what being a mother means, whether it's balancing work and home, being a stay-at-home mom who's expected to get everything right or dealing with infertility, postpartum depression, marriage issues or special needs kids. Their challenges and frustrations are depicted honestly and I felt for these women as they tried to navigate being true to themselves while doing the best by their kids because let's be honest - it's a conflict most moms (myself included!) can relate to.

"I want to remind us all to cherish this. These highs of motherhood that sustain us; that buoy us up when we're exhausted, or anxious, or it all feels like a bit of a struggle; these perfect, necessary moments."

If you're looking for a page-turner with well-developed characters and a different kind of mystery, Little Disasters is for you.

Thank you to NetGalley, Atria Books and the author for an advanced ecopy of this book to review. ( )

When motherhood frays your mental health, when you feel you must be perceived as strong and a perfect mother to the outside world, there will be disasters. Focusing on new mother, Jess, who recently gave birth to a baby girl and her friend Liz, a pediatric doctor it shows how professional ethics and friendship can be a difficult mix. Jess brings her baby daughter into emergency when Liz is on duty. Turns out the baby has a concussion and there’s reason to suspect it was not an accident. As the story unfolds, it opens a whole can of worms and who caused the concussion is not revealed until the end. Liz, the doctor, is having her own nightmares as well in dealing with her alcoholic mother and a baby sister who supposedly died of SIDS. Two parallel stories both reveal how fragile mental health is for young mothers trying to cope. ( )
