I flew through this book (which has been hard for me to do recently). A very good read. I received this book as an ARC during ALA Midwinter 2020 from Tin House. Thank you! ( ) Betsy tries so hard to be a mother to her sister, as Mom is suffering from depression and has attempted suicide many times. Dad passed away early on after living as an extreme disciplinarian of his daughters. Atlantis turns to drugs and makes poor choices after becoming addicted to pain pills after a back injury. Betsy still searches for answers, as her sister is found dead. Or is it her? The questions and quick cremation leaves Betsy to wonder if it was her sister or all camouflage for something much deeper. The pages pull you into a life of addiction, mental health issues, and desire for connection. I only wish this were fiction, as I feel for Betsy and the questions left unanswered! #hottingerhighlights Author Betsy Bonner’s sister Atlantis (née Eunice) was an aspiring recording artist with substance abuse and legal problems when she was found dead in a Mexican motel room. The investigation was poorly handled, and Bonner was left wondering if the body in the motel room really was her sister’s. To find out more, the author reached out to Atlantis’s “sketchy” associates, including people she dared not refer to by their real names. One such person, “Gretchen,” seemed to hold the key to the mysteries surrounding Atlantis’s disappearance and/or death, but she was evasive and in Bonner’s estimation, “dangerous.” Bonner weaves as compelling narrative as possible from the bare facts of her sister’s demise and her family’s suicide-prone history. I received an electronic pre-publication copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way. näyttää 3/3 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

"Reminiscent of Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich's The Fact of a Body and Maggie Nelson's The Red Parts, a perfect balance of memoir and true crime, The Book of Atlantis Black will have you questioning facts, rooting for secrets, and asking what it means to know the truth. A young woman is found dead on the floor of a Tijuana hotel room. An ID in a nearby purse reads "Atlantis Black." The police report states that the body does not seem to match the identification, yet the body is quickly cremated and the case is considered closed. So begins Betsy Bonner's search for her sister, and the unraveling of the mysterious final months before her disappearance, alleged overdose, and death. With access to Atlantis's email and social media accounts, Bonner attempts to decipher and construct a narrative: frantic and unintelligible Facebook posts, alarming images of a woman with a handgun, Craigslist companionship ads, DEA documentation, video surveillance, police reports, phone calls, and moments together conjured from memory. Through a history only she and Atlantis shared-a childhood fraught with abuse and mental illness, Atlantis's precocious yet short rise in the music world, and through it all an unshakable bond of sisterhood-Bonner finds questions that only lead to more questions and possible clues that seem to point in no particular direction. In this haunting memoir and piercing true crime account, Bonner must decide how far she will go to understand a sister who, like the mythical island she renamed herself for, might prove impossible to find"-- Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
