"The Pursuit of the Pankera is one of the most audacious experiments ever done in science fiction by the legendary author of the classic bestseller Starship Troopers. Robert A. Heinlein wrote The Number of the Beast, which was published in 1980. In the book Zeb, Deety, Hilda and Jake are ambushed by the alien "Black Hats" and barely escape with their lives on a specially configured vehicle (the Gay Deceiver) which can travel along various planes of existence, allowing them to visit parallel universes. However, unknown to most fans, Heinlein had already written a "parallel" novel about the four characters and parallel universes in 1977. He effectively wrote two parallel novels about parallel universes. The novels share the same start, but as soon as the Gay Deceiver is used to transport them to a parallel universe, each book transports them to a totally different parallel world. From that point on the plot lines diverge completely. While The Number of the Beast morphs into something very different, more representative of later Heinlein works, The Pursuit of the Pankera remains on target with a much more traditional Heinleinesque storyline and ending, reminiscent of his earlier works. The Pursuit of the Pankera was never published and there have been many competing theories as to why (including significant copyright issues in 1977). Over time the manuscript was largely forgotten but survived in fragments. A recent re-examination of these fragments, however, made it clear that put together in the right order they constituted the complete novel. And here it finally is: Robert A. Heinlein's audacious experiment. A fitting farewell from one of the most inventive science fiction writers to have ever lived: a parallel novel about parallel universes as well as a great adventure pitting the forces of good versus evil only the way Heinlein could do"--… (lisätietoja)

This is a re-package (and possibly edited, I didn't compare) re-issue of Heinlein's The Number of the Beast. I wasn't aware of that when I picked it up, thinking I'd stumbled upon a miracle: a Heinlein novel I hadn't yet read! I was deeply but only momentarily disappointed as it had been over 11 years since I'd read it the first time and thoroughly enjoyed being back in this world - and ended up re-reading all the companion books this fall/winter as well! Rather interesting posthumous publication, seemed a more simplistic version of The Number Of The Beast that was very enjoyable in it's own right. Have to wonder if Robert wrote this before, after or during the writing of "The Number of The Beast" as the answer would raise many more questions. ( )

When I learned that The Pursuit of the Pankera was supposed to be closer to the older Heinlein stories I bought it. I was able to finish it and found it somewhat enjoyable. The story started out with romance (at least of a sort), which, being a romantic I liked, and the action started shortly after. After arriving on Mars the protagonists discover they are on Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom and spend an extended amount of time there, mostly in Helium. When they finally move on they visit Oz and then spend another extended stay at Prime base in E.E. "Doc" Smith's Lenman universe. Then, after visiting many more universes they find one in which they sort of settle down in. There are issues with the story, but I think almost any SF story has problems that are ignored but can be easily spotted if you look for them. I found the biggest problem with the story is that there is no real tension for the whole time our protagonists are on Barsoom, OZ or at Prime Base. Those stops are pretty much just Heinlein getting to play in the Burroughs' Barsoom, Baum's Oz and "Doc" Smith Lensman universes, but without any danger (and in the case of Helium some jarring capitalism tossed in). Also, I felt the ending of the book was tacked on and rushed. So, overall I don’t think it’s one of Heinlein’s best works, but I do think it’s still worth reading. ( )

This was the original version of Number of the Beast - quite an interesting read even if it's not as polished as the latter. ( )
