The only thing was... she was about to tell him she wanted a divorce. She calls their grown daughters, one of whom gets along with John, the other with her, and when she gets to the hospital and gets a ziploc bag with John’s belongings and cell phone, the shocks keep on coming. This was my first book by Kristin Higgins, and it had terribly interesting characters, lots of sympathetic family drama, and a story that kept me turning pages. I particularly liked Sadie and Noah’s piece of the story, and their second-chance romance. Parts of this are sad, as they deal with end of life, traumatic brain injury, and caregiving. I enjoyed the multiple perspectives and flashbacks, and I’m not usually a person who cares for flashbacks! Please excuse typos/name misspellings. Entered on screen reader. This story was not what I expected. Told by 4 different points of view (each of the family members), there was a lot going on! My heart broke for each and every one of them individually and when I was done, I wasn't quite sure who had my allegiance. Did I side with the mother, Barb? After so many years of marriage, she's ready for a divorce only to find her husband has a stroke? Do I side with John, the father? The cheating bastard has a stroke... What about Sadie? She's still heartbroken from relationships past and present and now her precious father has had a stroke... Or do I side with Juliet? She's the eldest daughter, mother's favorite, and is hiding in the closet having panic attacks and trying to paint the perfect picture of her life... In the end, can't I feel for them all? I thoroughly enjoy Higgins's books so I'm happy I've only read a few so far---many more to look forward to. Each character is so well portrayed, chapter by chapter and there really isn't a dull moment as the reader is led, round and round through the ups and downs. I'm also impressed with the details she can bring out about each character's employment skills. A perfect story highlighting almost all the issues that exist in a family- Secrets hidden, unhappiness, drifting apart, favoritism. And how to manage and overcome all the struggles and loss. What makes this a brilliant read, is that the story is narrated through the viewpoints of four members of the family; Barb, Juliet, Sadie and John. Thanks to that, we get to know each of the characters better and are able to enjoy their journey through the book as they face their challenges, discover their true hidden selves and come together as a family. Another wonderful read! ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

I love that this book was set in CT. Though the town, “Stoningham”, is fictional it was fun to be familiar with many of the real places like UConn Health, Gaylord, Madison Beach Hotel, Rte 2 and more ( )
