Wow, evil really does exist! Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of Sister Dear by Hannah Mary McKinnon.
Eleanor Hardwicke is a self-conscious but smart web designer. She is struggling personally and financially, when she hears a devastating piece of news. She finds out that the man she thought was her father is actually not her biological father, and she also finds out that she has a sister, Victoria.
Victoria is everything that Eleanor is not, and Eleanor makes a plan to befriend Victoria. But, Eleanor doesn’t tell Victoria that she is her half-sister, and that proves to be a big mistake..
I will be reading more from this author! , While I knew something was coming, I didn’t realize the extent of someone’s manipulation, and was a bit surprised at how long the plan had been in action.
This novel is a study in manipulation and deep seated hatred, revenge, and entitlement. Masterfully done

*** Blog Tour

Sister Dear by Hannah Mary McKinnon is as much a character study as a thriller. The book begins with a crime, a guilty party, and a loss. The rest of the book is to be the story of how everything gets to this point. Part of the ending I see coming, but the extent of the planning and machinations come as a surprise not only to the characters in the book but also to me. This book is a page turner until the very end.

One sister has it all; the other sister is jealous.

When Eleanor’s beloved father dies, she discovers that he was not her biological father. She has never felt accepted by her mother or her half-sister Amy. So she tracks down her biological father and finds she has another half-sister Victoria. And Victoria has it all. Now Eleanor wants what Victoria has. After all, sisters share – don’t they?

Honesty here – this book is not a thriller. It sounds like it would be, but it’s not. I never got that adrenaline rush that comes with a good thriller.

I really could not muster any sympathy for Eleanor. Her life was messed up, and she continues to make choices that will make it even messier. She becomes a person I really did not like. But then none of the characters in this book are very likeable.
Thank you to MIRA for the advance e-galley to read and review. ( )

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Sister Dear, by Hanna Mary McKinnon, is available at booksellers on May 26, 2020. It's my first taste of Ms McKinnon's work and wow! A psychological thriller that kept me on my toes. I never saw the ending coming. All the Machiavellian plotting and twisted feelings were terrific. There's not much I can say, beyond the descriptive blurb, without giving away any of the plot or wicked twists. I rarely give a 5 star review, not everything is worthy...but I'm giving it now. Do yourself a favor and read this book! It's worth it.

Sister Dear by Hannah Mary McKinnon is a recommended psychological thriller.

Eleanor Hardwicke’s beloved father dies leaving her alone in the world. Her mother, long divorced from her father, is a wretched woman who has always favored her sister and relished abusing Eleanor emotionally. Even worse than losing her father is learning that he wasn't her biological father. She was the product of an affair and before he died her father left the name of her biological father. Eleanor researches him, discovers they both live in Portland, Maine. He is married with a glamorous wife and they have a beautiful daughter, Victoria. Eleanor meets with him, learning he paid her mother off to leave and he wants nothing to do with her. Eleanor sets her sights on meeting her half-sister. She manages to insert herself into Victoria's life and becomes part of her world.

The narrative is told from Eleanor's point-of-view and you know right from the start that something is going to go terribly wrong. A whole lot goes wrong for Eleanor right away, and there is some sympathy for her at the beginning and you will hope she can pull herself together. You will hope she gives her neighbor Lewis a chance, but you will also wonder why he seems too good to be real. You'll wonder why she hasn't smartened up about her mother and sister. Then her mental state seems to become more unstable as she constantly berates herself, even as she is trying to get close to her newly discovered half-sister. After that she does start to grate on your nerves as the plot takes a turn to the unbelievable. Victoria is too good to be real.

It is more chick lit than psychological thriller and I didn't care for any of the characters by the end. The ending itself is a sudden twisty reveal, but at that point you are already anticipating what happens so it's not shocking. I admittedly had to force myself to continue reading this after the halfway point, but it did end up holding my attention and I finished it, so kudos for that.
