""Promoting Rigor Through Higher Level Questioning" equips teachers with effective questioning strategies to challenge students to think critically, as well as to explore their innate curiosity and imagination. Understanding the levels of Bloom's taxonomy is the key to being able to formulate higher level questions for use in students' assignments, assessments, day-to-day activities, and classroom discussions. But simply asking questions is not enough. Teachers must create a culture in which students expect and can engage in rigorous, higher level questioning and discussions, and are comfortable enough that they can ask those questions of one another and themselves. This would be a fabulous gift for principals to give to new staff or actually any staff! Everything you could possibly want to know about questioning techniques. Absolutely fabulous. I knew a lot about questioning but this improved my practice. ( )

Written for teachers seeking to develop critical thinking skills in their students. Starting with Bloom's Taxonomy (1956) the author expands into more recent frameworks from which to ask the right questions to engage students and force them to actually think. Recommended any educator who would like to upgrade their tool set around critical thinking. ( )

I really enoyed reading this book. There is a lot of great information and practical suggestions for improving questioning in the classroom. I liked that every level of complexity was addressed with regard to questiong as well as the focus of increasing critical thinking and deep dialogue in lessons. This book certainly made me reflect on my questioning and become more aware of the questions that I ask throughout the school day. I liked the idea that students should be given opportunities to ask complex questions, as well. The question stems that were provided in the book were helpful, as I've been using them in my "do nows." This text is a great resource for all content teachers as well as all levels. I will be refrencing this book again in the future. Thanks! ( )

The book begins with a chance for the reader to evaluate their own questioning ability in the classroom with a self-assessment of the types of questions that are asked of students. As you progress through this book, the author takes you understanding what high-level questions are, the difference between question difficulty and rigor, and understanding convergent and divergent and other forms of questions and thinking. Bloom's taxonomy is also explored in relation to creating strong questions. The remainder of the book provides examples of activities and strategies that help develop critical thinking from students. The book is easy to read and provides many examples to understand the concepts presented. Todd Stanley is listed as a gifted and talented coordinator and that has been in education for 18 years. This book will help educators evaluate and strengthen their questioning and as a result help increase student learning. ( )

I believe this book will be a great help to teachers who are trying to add rigor to their class. One of the most important things that the author does is to remind the reader that there is a difference between rigor and difficulty. Just making things harder is not rigor, nor should it be the goal that teachers have in mind when they are trying to increase rigor. Instead, the author tells the reader that rigor is using questions that require higher levels of thinking instead of just doing more work. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to bring rigor to their class. ( )
