When Tristan's date disappears just before they are due to meet, he and Kate leap to the possibility that she is the latest in a list of young women who have been snatched by a serial killer. Throughout the story we are very aware of the need to find Magdalena before she dies. From time to time the author has been telling us the story from her point of view and we know that time is running out. The police are difficult to persuade to take action. Is Detective Inspector Henry Ko hiding something? Or is he the tool of the wealthy family who own the land that the Shadow Sands Reservoir is on? This is a well plotted story, a mystery to be explored, a few red herrings, interesting characters, some personal details explored about both Kate and Tristan, and an opening created for a follow-on. Quite a bit more gritty than the cozies that I have been reading lately. Two years after the Nine Elms copycat case, Kate and Jake find a body in a reservoir while scuba diving. The discovery raises questions for Kate, especially since the police don't seem overly interesting in investigating an "accidental" death. However, as Kate and her assistant probe the death, they find a a pattern of young missing people and a possible survivor. When a visiting professor known to Tristan goes missing, the two ramp us their search. During the investigation, Kate also must address Jake's turning 16 and his desire to see his father. Shadow Sands picks up where Nine Elms left off and is every bit as good. In this book, Kate Marshall and her assistant, Tristan Harper, are sucked into investigating multiple disappearances after Kate and her son, Jake, accidentally find the body of a young man while diving in the reservoir near Ashdean. The tension rises when a colleague of theirs goes missing in the same mysterious fog that seems to haunt the dark, lonely roads near the Shadow Sands campground. Robert Bryndza drives the plot with suspense and action and doesn't let it get bogged down with overly descriptive narrative. This was an easy, entertaining read that I highly recommend to anyone who loves a good thriller. "Criminology academic Kate Marshall is on a scuba jaunt with her son when they dive toward a shocking discovery: the body of a teenage boy entangled below the surface of the Shadow Sands reservoir. The detective chief inspector's too-quick narrative of a tragic drowning doesn't add up, and when Kate follows the evidence, it leads to a darker discovery. The victim is only the latest in a series of mysterious deaths and disappearances linked to the moorlands--and a mythic phantom said to hide in the rolling fog. When a researcher of urban legends vanishes without a trace, Kate and her associate Tristan Harper must act fast and look deep if they hope to find her alive. But the elusive serial killer they're hunting isn't the only one a step ahead of Kate and Tristan. Someone else is making dead certain that the secrets of Shadow Sands stay buried." -- Amazon.com Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |

This is the second book in a series of four so far, and while there are some references to the previous book it could be read as a standalone story, however my advice start at the beginning. Well written with superb characters throughout, a brilliant totally gripping start and whilst it does not maintain the hold your breath tension throughout, it is totally absorbing and an unputdownable page turner. Why does everyday life force me to put book down. More than enough surprises and twists along the way for this reader, with serious tense moments to end.
Completely and utterly recommended. ( )
