"Andrea Hejlskov was certain of one thing: life could not continue as it was. She and her husband had become disillusioned with their jobs and the pressures of urban living, their four children were spending too much time in their bedrooms with their computers, and conversations had become as elusive as their connection to a meaningful existence. For Hejlskov and her family, life had become too complicated; no matter how fast they ran they never really got anywhere, no matter how much they worked they never had enough money. Facing a constant feeling of failure and always falling behind, the Hejlskovs chose to bolt in the other direction. On a quest to find out what really counts, they made a bold move: they sold their house and parted with most of their belongings. In the year that followed, the family built a cabin deep in the wilds of Sweden and conducted an experiment: could they live a fulfilling life while measuring their impact on a world desperately in need of change? What was meant to be a one-year experiment became a six-year journey that fundamentally changed everything in their lives. Escape to the Wild: A Family's Return to Simplicity is the remarkable true story of a family that drops everything to start life anew. Both a poignant memoir and passionate critique of modern life, Escape to the Wild is a reminder that we can choose to lead the life we live."-- Provided by publisher.… (lisätietoja)

This Danish author and her husband decided to take their family and live off the grid in the forest in Sweden for one year. Though it doesn’t say it in the book, the back cover says it has turned into six years. This included four children – 15-year old twins, an 11-year old, and a something(11?)-month old.

I love the idea of it, of anyone who is able to do this. It was really hard (no surprise, really). They had some help from another guy who’d done it once before and decided to “join” them (a little ways away) and do it again. Others came by, as well, as the author did write a blog, so people knew what they were doing (though she didn’t mention it often, nor mention how she was posting, how often, etc – though eventually she did mention having a generator that was rarely used; it died in the fall, anyway). Boy, those two sure did have some anger issues, though. There was a lot of fighting between them. I imagine it was incredibly stressful, but I certainly didn’t expect all the anger. The author did address this later in the book – that she had focused more on the conflict and not the things they enjoyed. ( )

I started reading this book March 5/20. As of April 16/20, I stopped reading at page 86 as it no longer interests me. I found the start very disjointed and by page 27 lost track of the characters. Had to search out the family members. Dad suffers from clinical depression, as do I. Mum has been hospitalized for it. Four children ages 15, 14, 10 and 9 months. Seems drastic to go back to living in the wilderness without any thought as to how to do it. The story line is very drawn out, so I became bored with it. Not a fan of living in the outdoors. I camped with my wife, her idea, for 15 years because I loved her but not because I wanted too. I was a reluctant participant. This was only for two weeks in August at a Provincial Park. We had access to drinking water, washrooms, and showers. Their story just wasn’t interesting to me. ( )

This book did not hook me in the slightest. The beginning just feels like a random spew of words, and is very confusing. There are many names mentioned but no explanation as to who they are until the next chapter.

Even as I read further, the writing style is very stiff, and not engaging. I can't be sure, but this may have been translated to English which makes it even choppier. I gave up on reading this at page 28.

*Please note I won a copy of this book via Librarything.

An honest account of a family's struggles to survive in the wilderness without the comforts of modern society. The author describes the first year of their experiment to see if escaping into the wilderness would heal the strain on their relationships and bring them closer as a family. This was an interesting read and introduces some unique characters. Whether or not it was the right thing to do I find questionable but it certainly was a risky social experience for the children involved. This is based on the author's perspective. I am left to wonder how the other family members felt. ( )

I didn't really know what to expect when I started this book, but I assumed it was some type of guide that detailed how to go about living off the grid. As someone who has always had a fascination with escaping the modern world and retreating into the wilderness, I imagined I would lose myself in vivid descriptions of nature and peace.

This book was nothing like I expected, however, but what I found instead was a touching and engaging story of one person's journey, both good and bad, or trying to change their life. Raw and honest, this book captivated me until the end, and although it was nothing like I thought it would be, it ended up being more informative and real than anything. ( )
