Four short stories. "spritz his hen of the woods". All entertaining, absorbing, and compelling supernatural stories.
Mr Harrigan's Phone was reminiscent of the old story of a mobile phone being buried with the corpse. I enjoyed reading about the new apple phone (in such a short time it is now so dated!).
The Life of Chuck, published in reverse order in 3 acts, based on Walt Whitman's line of poetry "I contain multitudes"; particularly good piece of writing about dancing - which for a non-dancer like me made me consider taking up the sport activity. The reverse order of the acts didn't really work for me, but I preferred it to Martin Amis' Times Arrow.
If it Bleeds was a spin-off story from The Outsider. This is not my favourite King story, mostly crime fiction but with his supernatural twist. The story had potential for being longer as it began with one character on holiday (who knew about the Outsider) but ended with a letter to him denoting the success of stopping this new Outsider.
Rat was by far my favourite story in this volume. Very reminiscent of the shining - an author cut off by fowl weather, with the potential of him driven mad by his determination to compose his novel...but I loved the Faustian turn to the tale. While I was reading it, I would be taken by surprise looking up from my reading that the weather outside was not as described in the book, so absorbed I was! ( )

Four short stories
Mr. Harrigan's Phone. "Been there" book but King is so good that wasn't a bad thing.
The Life of Chuck. Used a plot device I hate. First part of book was confusing and interesting. Then it did a "X number of *years* ago" thing. I hate that. Sometimes is just a huge spoiler. Wasn't the case this time. Well done.
If it Bleeds. My favorite. Quickly noticed spoilers for another story/novel, so stopped reading this one and read The Outsider." Also gave that book four stars. Can't go wrong with King.
Ratt. King went wrong here though. This one may even be a two star story.

Excellent read as always. Starts off normal but soon becomes intriguing, then page-turning, and finally you are right in the incredible mind of Stephen King and his mind-blowing horror genre. ( )

I can't even remember the last time I awarded all the stars to a King book. I know it's been a few years.

I'm really happy to say that, on this one, King earns every single damn star. There's four stories in here, and I won't take you through them. I will, however, say that, while they're all separate, non-connected stories (well, okay, they all take place in the Stephen King Universe, but they aren't directly connected to each other), they do have a common thread running through them.

King has written about death in pretty much everything he's published. But these four stories look at death a little more delicately, and with the compassion of someone who knows they have many more years behind them than ahead. At least one character in each outing faces the death of disease or simply old age, rather than the usually more violent death that we're used to.

And King handles each one with a deft, loving touch.

Now, having said that, these deaths are by no means the central pivot of any of the stories, but they do serve, as I said, as a tenuous connection between the four. All I will say about three of the four are, the stories are wonderful, touching on youthful love and lust, the horrors of actually wrangling the creative process to the ground and making it work for you, and a brilliant take on the Amadou Hampâté Bâ quote, "when an old man dies, it’s a library burning." I have to say, the "burning library" story in particular stole my heart simply for the scene with the dancing. That's all I'll say.

I do want to mention a couple of things about the title story If It Bleeds, which is the much-touted return of Holly Gibson from the Bill Hodges trilogy of books, as well as [b:The Outsider|36124936|The Outsider|Stephen King|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1524596540l/36124936._SY75_.jpg|57566471]. I will say I found the trilogy offered diminishing returns as it went on, and I can say I only enjoyed the first half of Outsider, because King seemed to get very lost in the second half and couldn't stick the landing. So, with that out there, three things about this story.

First, if you haven't read those previous four books, and most especially Outsider, go back and read them first, as they all get spoiled, and this story is a direct sequel to Outsider.

Second, this is very much a solo Gibney outing, and for that, I'm grateful. With her fifth appearance, she's obviously becoming one of King's favourite go-to characters, like Flagg was in the 70s and 80s, but on the side of good, and while I wasn't super fond of her in the first couple of books, she's really grown on me. This story pays off by letting you into her world a lot more and, while that is often a disappointment (I'm looking at you, Hannibal Lecter...Harris should have left you alone after your second appearance [but the television show was brilliant]), this outing only does very well by Ms. Gibney.

Finally, this story, to me, delivers the payoff that was only promised in Outsider, but never delivered on. So, thanks Uncle Stevie.

When this thing comes out. Get it. Read it. You're gonna love it. ( )

I love Stephen King's short stories, and this volume contained 4 of them. However, I found the stories to be just OK, not reaching the horrifying excellence of most of the short stories written earlier in his career. ( )

...as classic as his novels are, his shorter fiction has been just as gripping over the years, and includes such classics as "The Body" and "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption."...King still owns the fright business like none other, but the iconic author will keep you up late at night engrossed in four tales about our dreams and our frailties.

...the mid-length narrative suits his talents particularly well, permitting a degree of expansiveness while maintaining a controlled, disciplined approach to the material at hand. The results are stories that cover a surprising amount of emotional territory but can still be read in a sitting....In “If It Bleeds,” King continues to draw from a rich and varied reservoir of stories. At its best, his work remains deeply empathetic and compulsively readable. May the reservoir never run dry.

The straightforward cadences of King’s voice, paired with his signature sit-down-and-let-me-tell-you-a-story style, were immediately soothing. And the stories he was telling — about the seductions and corruptions of technology, the extremes of beauty and depravity in even the most ordinary life, the workings of a universe we can never entirely understand — were somehow exactly what I wanted to read right now.... I wouldn’t begrudge any reader refuge in familiar pleasures, least of all now. We all need solace wherever we can find it... As sirens blare outside my Brooklyn window and the headlines grow more apocalyptic by the day, I might start working my way through King’s backlist. He’s good company in the dark.

The master of supernatural disaster returns with four horror-laced novellas....King has gone a far piece from the killer clowns and vampires of old, with his monsters and monstrosities taking on far more quotidian forms—which makes them all the scarier. Vintage King: a pleasure for his many fans and not a bad place to start if you’re new to him.

This set of novellas is thought-provoking, terrifying, and, at times, outright charming, showcasing King’s breadth as a master storyteller. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: King’s love of short fiction makes this a powerful addition to his megapopular oeuvre and fans will be on the hunt.
