This is a dark psychological thriller that opens up with a bloody scene. Laura and her 17 year-old daughter, Tilly, are grieving the death of Gavan, their husband/father. Financial, medical, and social struggles lead them to accept an offer to live on an organic farm commune. Mysterious things happen along with strange rituals, but there are a lot of twists that you likely won’t see coming, although one or two are obvious. All of the drama ends with a thought provoking question, which the author leaves for you to decide. ( )

This was a good psychological. Laura has just lost her husband to a horrible death, and both her and their daughter are grieving. She is not sure how to move forward and with lawsuits looming and her business failing she has no idea how she will be able to continue to support her and Tilly. An unexpected offer comes her way, and even though something in her gut is warning her, she pushed it aside and decides to take the help that’s offered.

Laura and Tilly head out to Oak Leaf Organics just to see what it is like. This is a place of refuge for those who need help getting back on their feet and need a place to stay for a while. All that is asked is that they help chip in with chores around the house, meals and farming and they can live there essentially rent free and no questions asked for however long is needed. Laura also finds that Alex, the one who runs the place used to dabble in law and is willing to help her with the lawsuit and all that comes with insurance payout and settlements with the death of a loved one.

It seems too good to be true, and yet things seem off. Tilly seems happy for once though. She doesn’t mind the hard work, has settled in well with the others and seems to laugh once in a while again, maybe Laura is just reading into things a bit. But as the time progresses more and more strange things keep happening and even though there is a valid excuse for each Laura knows that something is not right about this place, and possibly these people.

Each time Laura convinces herself that her and Tilly are going to leave and figure out how to make it, it seems something comes up that either changes her mind or blocks her ability to leave. What is really going on here, and can they get out?

Thank you to Grand Central Publishing for the free book. This was a good psychological and you just never knew what was going on, and how was doing what. Told from mother and daughter perspective it was interesting to see how each one interrupted situations and events that were happening. ( )

I always get excited when I see a new Louise Jensen book coming out; her books are absolutely brilliant and if you haven't read one yet, what are you waiting for? Pick one, pick them all, you won't be disappointed. I must warn you though, once you pick up The Family, you simply can't do anything until you finish the book. Thank goodness for cold and wet October weekends; not that I need an excuse to stay inside to read, of course. The Family is definitely a one-sitting kind of book, with an intriguing prologue and little cliffhangers at the end of each chapter making you read just one more after just one more.

The Family, as you would expect, is about family: Laura's flesh family (doesn't that sound creepy?) and her chosen family (which really is creepy). Laura and her daughter, Tilly, find themselves in unimaginable circumstances when Laura's husband, Gavan, dies. With so much turmoil surrounding Gavan's death, Laura finds herself ostracized from Gavan's family and struggling to pay the rent. With nowhere left to turn, she is invited to join the community at Gorphwysfa (Welsh for 'resting place') and is unable to resist joining the family led by the alluring and enigmatic Alex.

The story is told from three viewpoints, that of Laura, Tilly and Alex. The characters have been developed so wonderfully that each voice had its own individuality but what they each have in common is a heartbreaking story at their core. Laura has never had much luck with her 'flesh' family, Tilly is suffering at school thanks to a group of mean girls and Alex just wants to look after his family...or does he?

I think Louise Jensen is a bit of a magician; with slight of hand, she has you looking in completely the wrong direction as she plucks the ace out of her sleeve for the big reveal. I knew there would be at least one secret struggling to remain hidden but Louise Jensen goes one better with some absolutely huge, jaw-dropping surprises in store for the reader. Just when I thought that I'd heard it all and I could breathe again, Louise Jensen completely took the wind out of my sails and I was actually left breathless. This is absolutely brilliant writing; Louise Jensen, I salute you!

The Family is jaw-droppingly brilliant; it's a highly addictive read that completely took my breath away. Clear your schedule as once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down.

I chose to read an ARC and this is my honest and unbiased opinion. ( )

Laura is grieving after the sudden death of her husband. Struggling to cope alone with her teenage daughter Tilly she accepts help from a local community organisation. Unknown to Laura this new family is not what it seems.

I have read a few books this year about cults/ family situations and yet to find one that I really enjoyed. This book failed to deliver for me also.

The story was ok and for a large part I was quite invested in the plot. However towards the end when all the secrets are revealed I just found it really messy. Secrets can make a thriller but sometimes there are just too many.

I found this book overall just average. The plot itself was promising with some predictable elements but just ended up for me nothing special. ( )

After Laura and tilly's life implodes in a dramatic fashion it seems like the whole world is against them.
At rock bottom and about to lose there home a business acquaintance of Laura offers an unexpected lifeline, a place to go and regroup while she gets her life together.
With the divide between mother and daughter gradually widening to the point that miscommunication is rife and neither are correctly interpreting the others signals and clues correctly.
There own personal guilt and grief creating a barrier and as the unspoken truths and secrets mountain grows ever higher it is almost like this landmark is a metaphor for there imploding family dynamics.
A hill to climb to bridge the gap that has been unintentionally created here.
All though it is clear that despite what appearances suggest, and each of them thinks, the love is definitely here and it is mostly just misunderstanding and a lack of real communication.
This, in turn, manages to open up a gap that makes it easy for others to take advantage, especially with the younger Tilly.
This is told from three separate POV The mother Laura, The daughter Tilly and Alex an enigmatic figurehead of a local group of people communally living together on a local farm.
The family is a psychological thriller that focuses on family and its hidden dynamics it was a solid read that does take a while to heat up.
One it does its full steam ahead and its the final few chapters that rescue this somewhat.
One final thing the ending itself I found to be slightly anti-climatic with some unanswered questions.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of The Family.
