A Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestseller. "Cleverly crafted...The Vine Witch is a grown-up fairy tale with a twisty-turn-y story line of magic, love, and betrayal that holds your attention...Pure escapism." --Forbes A young witch emerges from a curse to find her world upended in this gripping fantasy set in turn-of-the-century France. For centuries, the vineyards at Château Renard have depended on the talent of their vine witches, whose spells help create the world-renowned wine of the Chanceaux Valley. Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcière Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger. Vigneron Jean-Paul Martel naively favors science over superstition, and he certainly doesn't endorse the locals' belief in witches. But Elena knows a hex when she sees one, and the vineyard is covered in them. To stay on and help the vines recover, she'll have to hide her true identity, along with her plans for revenge against whoever stole seven winters of her life. And she won't rest until she can defy the evil powers that are still a threat to herself, Jean-Paul, and the ancient vine-witch legacy in the rolling hills of the Chanceaux Valley.… (lisätietoja)

Magic in the air!

Considering this is the authors debut novel it is absolute M A G I C!!!! WE start in the swamp of all places. Slightly confusing at first until we realize it's the inner monologue of a toad of all things. Confusing, until we learn she's actually a woman that's been trapped in toad form for seven years by someone unknown. We're introduced to a magical landscape in more ways than one. The French countryside full of vineyards and dazzling wines brought to their peak perfection through the age old courtesy and love of vine witches. What happens when one such witch comes home from her seven year curse to find all she knew had changed. Can she find her footing when her home and love are no longer hers? When she not certain who cursed her and the vines she loves so very much. Her magical tale will weave its way into your heart and beg to hear more! This is one author I can't wait to see more from. I really wish I could give this book more stars because I really like the idea of the premise, and I loved Elena's character, backstory and journey a lot! However, the pacing of this book was really slow and I struggled to maintain interest. I want to read the next one but don't know if I will honestly be able to finish it. However, beautiful world building and great characters! ( )

Series Info/Source: This is the first book in the Vine Witch series. There are three books in this series right now. I borrowed this Audible audiobook through Kindle Unlimited.

Audiobook Quality (4/5): This audiobook was well done and I enjoyed the narrator. I would recommend listening to this on audiobook if you enjoy audiobooks.

Story (3/5): This was an okay historical fantasy. I liked the idea of Vine Witch magic but felt like the story was a bit slow and predictable. The premise of the story is that Elena has been cursed into toad form for seven years, we meet up with her as she finally manages to break her curse. She is a vine witch and returns to her old family home to find things very changed and under the management of a young man who doesn’t believe in magic. Elena is determined to get the curses off of her vineyard and get revenge on the person who cursed her, but to do so she must be sneaky with her magic.

Characters (3/5): I never engaged with any of the characters here. They were all a bit shallow and selfish, they also didn’t have a lot of dimension to them. They were okay but not great.

Setting (3/5): I enjoyed the historical French setting but we don’t really get to see much outside of Chateau Renard. The vineyard was interesting and it was intriguing to learn about wine making some. However, I would have liked more explanation of the broader world and a broader setting.

Writing Style (4/5): This was written fine, there is some beautiful description in here around magic and the vineyards. I enjoyed the idea of Vine Witches and thought the magic was interesting, if a bit ambiguous about how it worked. I did think the pacing was a bit slow and didn’t care much for the characters or the overall storyline.

My Summary (3.5/5): Overall this was an okay read. I enjoyed some of the beautiful descriptions here and liked the idea of Vine Witches and their magic. I didn’t enjoy the predictable, slow-paced story and never engaged with the characters all that well. I don’t plan on reading more of this series. If you enjoy historical fiction with some light fantasy touches you might enjoy this. ( )

So this wasn't a bad book, I just had a hard time sticking with it. The writing at times pushed me out of the story and the book starts to feel really predictable after a while. I loved the cover, and loved the idea of vine witches though. I just don't know if I would read the next book in this series or not.

"The Vine Witch" starts off with a woman named Elena Boureanu finally breaks a curse that has kept her hibernated (or whatever you want to call it as a frog) for 7 years until she manages to put herself back together as a human. I have to say that the description of this turned my stomach a bit. As soon as Elena realizes what has happened and someone must have cursed her, she's off for vengeance. From there we have Elena running back to confront her former fiancee (Bastien Du Monde) and the new owner of the Chateau she used to own (Jean-Paul).

So Elena is a vine witch which is a person that is able to become one with a vineyard. Yeah I don't know guys, I was just as surprised as you were. I thought maybe she be into like vines that were more sinister or something. Elena is able to communicate with vines, bugs, birds, and the soil in which the vines are planted. She becomes important to Jean-Paul though since the vineyard is failing and he doesn't know why.

I think that there's not a lot here though. This all seemed interesting but Elena fell flat to me. I think because for me it was obvious who the big bad was and I got bored waiting for Elena to catch on. Jean-Paul did nothing for me. I am sure that Smith wrote this as two opposites attracting (Jean-Paul is all science is the answer!) but I just got bored by both of them.

The writing was interesting when focusing on the vine witch aspects of it, but the murder mystery and all of that didn't engage me at all. And of course it didn't help that Elena is the one who everyone thinks is the killer. Apparently you break a curse and you are no longer a frog and your life can somehow get worse.

The ending was pretty formulaic I thought, no surprises. ( )
