From award-winning author Paul Yoon comes a beautiful, aching novel about three kids orphaned in 1960s Laos--and how their destinies are entwined across decades, anointed by Hernan Diaz as "one of those rare novels that stays with us to become a standard with which we measure other books." Alisak, Prany, and Noi--three orphans united by devastating loss--must do what is necessary to survive the perilous landscape of 1960s Laos. When they take shelter in a bombed out field hospital, they meet Vang, a doctor dedicated to helping the wounded at all costs. Soon the teens are serving as motorcycle couriers, delicately navigating their bikes across the fields filled with unexploded bombs, beneath the indiscriminate barrage from the sky. In a world where the landscape and the roads have turned into an ocean of bombs, we follow their grueling days of rescuing civilians and searching for medical supplies, until Vang secures their evacuation on the last helicopters leaving the country. It's a move with irrevocable consequences--and sets them on disparate and treacherous paths across the world. Spanning decades and magically weaving together storylines laced with beauty and cruelty, Paul Yoon crafts a gorgeous story that is a breathtaking historical feat and a fierce study of the powers of hope, perseverance, and grace.… (lisätietoja)

Southeast Asia had very difficult eras in the second half of the 20th century: civil wars in Korea and Vietnam, pitting the communist North against the capitalist South, genocide in Cambodia under Pol Pot, and perhaps the least known story of Laos, where bombs fell every nine minutes for more than a decade. This is the backdrop for Yoon's novel about three orphan teenagers in 1969: Prany, his younger sister (Noi) and their friend, Alisak. The three are corralled into running errands by a field doctor, riding their motorcycles across bomb laden fields. They are separated during a mass evacuation and the book is told from various POVs, recounting their memories of friendship, hardship, and the devastation of Laos. I did not connect with the characters nor the discordant storylines. ( )

Beautifully written story of three youngsters, orphans, who try to survive during the end of the Vietnam conflict. Sad, moving. It was a little bewildering toward the end to grasp a couple of late-appearing characters. I liked the book but I'm not sure I agree with the jacket blurb that it is about hope. ( )

This is an excellent story of the lives of Laotian orphans during the wartime 1960s and beyond. It is vivid, shockingly brutal at times, heartbreaking. ( )

Given the rave reviews this book has received — and taking into account my typical reading preferences — I expected to love Yoon's work. Sadly, "Run Me to Earth" just didn't do it for me. I never quite "connected" with the characters. I suppose that part of the issue may have been that I experienced it as an audiobook. One reviewer talked about how readers need to piece together events and fill in "gaps" along the way. I found the narrative disjointed and even a bit confusing in spots. Perhaps I would have appreciated it more if I had read it as opposed to listening to it. But I've logged 7,000+ hours in "Audiobook Land" over the decades. If anything, audiobooks have enhanced my appreciation of many works. ( )

Set in the 1960s during the Laotian civil war, Run Me to the Earth, tells the story of Aliska, Prany and Noi, three teens, all orphans, who are recruited by nurses to be motorcycle couriers, a perilous job during wartime. They work under the supervision of the very dedicated Doctor Vang in a former large estate house, now a bombed out field hospital. But the entire story in this small, remarkable, 250-page book covers decades.

In a captive prose—a river of words which pulls you along—Paul Yoon writes this mesmerizing story with great empathy; one surely cannot fail to read this and not be moved. And somehow, as all great books do, it speaks to our time.

This is the second Yoon book I have read, after his excellent 2017 collection, The Mountain: Stories, How I missed his earlier novel and first collection, I don’t know, but I have remedied that now. ( )
