I really wanted to like this book. It sounded humorous and different, and I tried three times to get into it, but ... apparently I don't like the style where the author is both part of the story and making it up as he goes. Never read anything like that before so I thought it would be interesting but it was not for me. Also, it probably helps to have read the Name of the Rose sometime more recently than 30+ years ago :) I give the author credit for a unique book, but I can't rate it because I I didn't get much past the first few chapters.

I requested this book from the LT Early Reviewers because I like mysteries, I like humor, and I like "The Name of the Rose." And while this book was not what I expected, I enjoyed it. Let's be clear, this book has a gimmick -- the palindromic (and I write this on 9-19-19), pseudonymous author is also the main character and is writing the book as the plot progresses (even though Ocram the character is often "surprised" by what he has just written). The reason this usually works is because Ocram the author doesn't take himself too seriously -- the book is constantly lurching out of character Ocram's control. Unfortunately, it's still a shtick, and, even done well, it can get old.

As promised, the novel plays with "The Name of the Rose." It spoofs the text, but it also makes Eco a character in Ocram the way Eco made Borges a character in Eco, and it references Sherlock Holmes. Eco's William of Baskerville is clearly Holmesian in appearance, at least in Weaver's English translation, and he can't resist telling his chronicler/assistant/patsy Adso at one point that a solution is "elementary." Ocram similarly dips into Conan Doyle, dropping a Holmesian vignette into the proceedings.

If you enjoy Jasper Fforde, or humorous meta-fiction in general, you could well like this. It's not as polished as Fforde tends to be, but it is having fun with genres and conventions and plying the reader with in-jokes.

Well, this was different. Fast and funny. I've actually read Umberto Eco's Name of the Rose so I think I grokked most of the spoof jokes. This novel is basically just Name of the Rose with a sense of humor and set in a modern day faux-retro monastery. But the author/narrator/main character, Marco Ocram, an obvious pseudonym, completely obliterates the fourth wall by constantly reminding the reader that he's half-assedly making the whole thing up as the events unfold. I guess this is, for the most part, cleverly done but I found that it was impossible for me to suspend disbelief and really enjoy the story or the characters. So there was no real emotional involvement or tension and the only thing left was the comedy, of which there is a considerable amount. I did enjoy it. ( )

Having thoroughly enjoyed "The Awful Truth About the Sushing Prize", I was very excited to read this next adventure of Marco Ocram. While it was still quite enjoyable, I did feel that this book dragged a bit whereas the other charged ahead. I've always enjoyed the way the author writes which makes you feel that he is literally making up the story as he goes but in this case, it did feel a bit more extreme. While the style of writing is clever, in this book it felt more forced. Overall, however, I did enjoy the story. It was clever, unique, and I've never read anything quite like it. I think it was a fun book but could have been about 10 chapters shorter. I would give it 3.5 stars. ( )
