Whew. Would Ava hate it if I called this story "inspirational?" ( )

Such a thought-provoking book. We meet Ava Lee, who is a burns survivor but with significant scars on her face and body, in the fire, she lost her parents and now living with her aunt and uncle. It is now time to return to school, how will the other students be with her?
We follow Ava through her struggles and her achievements, friendship and self-acceptance it is heartbreaking at times, I felt the pull and was almost in tears reading some of it.
Erin Stewart did an amazing job writing this, it flowed well and I would recommend it ( )

Sometimes it takes the right person at the right time to get us to finally see who we are. Sometimes that same said person may not show up at the right time, but what seems like the extremely most wrong time, and yet they are the one's that make us reach for all that we can or wish to be. That motivation, that outside driving force is a necessary evil for us to reach our potential, and when we're faced with additional obstacles outside the norm, it becomes something we not so much desire, but need all the same.

It was great to get to know Ava and her true self, not just the reflection she avoids thanks to circumstances beyond her control. It was empowering to see her rise above and endearing to see it happening with friends and then eventually on her own. Hey, I mean no man is an island, nor girl lost to the wolves, if she chooses not to be.

All in all, an enjoyable read that not only reveals the true ties of friendship, but the ugliness of prejudice, and the beauty/potential that lies within us all.

Wow, what a wonderful book about recovery from a major accident and learning to live with disability/disfigurement. We meet Ava a year after the fire that killed her parents and cousin. She survived but was left covered in burns. Her aunt wants her to return to school. Ava is hesitant.

This book was amazing in so many ways, showing the reality of recovery, the changes, both physical and psychological that someone goes through after a major illness or injury, and the stigmas they encounter. A wonderfully diverse cast, including best friend Piper, who was also recently in an accident and uses a wheelchair. So many great messages in this one, including finding your way back to your true self and what makes you happy as you move forward to living your best life.

Trigger Warnings: loss of parents, suicide attempt, bullying

Trigger Warnings: death, suicide attempt, depression, trauma

Ava Lee has lost everything in a house fire a little over a year ago: both her parents, her cousin, and 60% of her skin was severely burnt with third-degree burns. She now lives with extensive scarring and endless surgeries under the care of her Aunt Cora and Uncle Glen.

Ava makes a deal with her Aunt to go back to public school on a two week trial run. She's been homeschooled since the fire and she's convinced she'll be bullied right back through the front doors of the school.

But then she meets Piper, a student and fellow survivor, who goes to her new school. Piper lives life loudly and isn't afraid of what others think of her and her scars. With the help of Piper, Ava finds the courage to find her new normal.

Firstly, I both liked and disliked Ava and Piper's friendship. In some ways, I can agree with it being toxic, but in other ways, I can see they really needed each other. They both went through something horrific that changed their lives forever and they understood each other. I think my biggest issue was just how Piper and Kenzie's relationship was/wasn't/is and how that affected Ava and Piper's. I liked Piper's personality and how out there she was, but after everything we learned throughout the book, I don't know if I really knew Piper at the end.

This book really dives into trauma and how everyone handles it differently. There's a point in the book where Ava makes a comment about "Missing the signs" and who she was talking with replied, "All of us did." It really shows that even those who can make the whole room laugh and seem the life of the party have their dark days too. Ava even talks about "the darkness" and it creeping in. I know what that feels like and sometimes it's paralyzing. This novel has a lot of mental health growth as well.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of YA with themes of mental health, recovery journey, and friendship. Also, fans of the middle grade book, Wonder, would also enjoy this book. ( )
