From the author of the multi-million copy bestsellerThe Tattooist of Auschwitz comes a new novel based on an incredible true story of love and resilience. Her beauty saved her -- and condemned her. Cilka is just sixteen years old when she is taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp in 1942, where the commandant immediately notices how beautiful she is. Forcibly separated from the other women prisoners, Cilka learns quickly that power, even unwillingly taken, equals survival. When the war is over and the camp is liberated, freedom is not granted to Cilka: She is charged as a collaborator for sleeping with the enemy and sent to a Siberian prison camp. But did she really have a choice? And where do the lines of morality lie for Cilka, who was send to Auschwitz when she was still a child? In Siberia, Cilka faces challenges both new and horribly familiar, including the unwanted attention of the guards. But when she meets a kind female doctor, Cilka is taken under her wing and begins to tend to the ill in the camp, struggling to care for them under brutal conditions. Confronting death and terror daily, Cilka discovers a strength she never knew she had. And when she begins to tentatively form bonds and relationships in this harsh, new reality, Cilka finds that despite everything that has happened to her, there is room in her heart for love. From child to woman, from woman to healer, Cilka's journey illuminates the resilience of the human spirit--and the will we have to survive.… (lisätietoja)

Review: I personally liked this better than The Tattooist of Auschwitz, but I still feel like it failed to really show all the aspects of life in the concentration camp. It was an enjoyable read as a novel. I enjoyed these characters more, but I still feel like it felt short of showing real life people in the camps as well. ( )

I liked this even better than her first book, The Tattooist of Auschwitz. Like that story, Morris has taken the story of another real character, who was liberated from Auschwitz-Birkenau by the Soviets. Her liberation is not a happy one, as she is sentenced to a labor camp on charges of abetting the Nazis, without consideration of the horrific choice she made in order to survive. Life in Siberia is equally terrible: cold, treacherous, rape by the guards, and yet, Cilke manages to find a female doctor, who has her assigned to the hospital, where she continues to help others. Meanwhile, one of her fellow prisoners knows her secret and pressures Cilke to steal drugs, jeopardizing Cilke and her closest friend (and baby.)

Steel resolve to help others, too bad more people in the world aren't like Cilke: the world would be a better place for it. As an example, while working as a nurse/EMT, Cilke rushes into a collapsed mine to rescue workers, with no thought given to her own safety. ( )

A startling fictionalized saga of a real Czech woman who survived both a concentration camp and the Soviet gulag. Cilka, sixteen years old when she is transported to Birkenau, becomes not only a rape survivor but is also given the job of herding women into transport to the gas chamber. After liberation, being Czech, she is considered an enemy of Stalin's state and is sent to Vorkuta, a coal mine/work camp 99 miles above the Artic Circle. It feels inconceivable, going from the worst frying pan into the hottest fire, but Cilka is lucky enough to be chosen to work in the camp hospital by a sympathetic doctor. She finds pleasure and privilege in her work and is able to share the extra food she receives with the others in her hut. But once again, she is subject to brutal rape by the inmate trustees. This abuse seems never ending and barely survivable, but Cilka is finally released and marries a man she met in the gulag. There is a controversy about the "facts" that are part of Cilka's story, but it is portrayed as fiction. ( )

We met Cilka in The Tatooist of Auschwitz. She was a friend of Lale, the main character. This is her story.

Cilka Klein is a real person and this account by Heather Morris is a fictionalized account to present what wa likely her experience both in Auschwitz and as a prisoner in a Soviet Gulag. Although her circumstances are unbelievably horrifying she manages to survive and lives out her life well. ( )

Cilka was one of the characters in The Tattooist of Auschwitz and I was interested to learn more about her. Cilka’s Journey is a powerful story that was inspired by the true to life experiences of Auschwitz-Birkenau survivor Cilka who ends up in a Siberian work camp after being charged as a collaborator for “sleeping with the enemy”. This novel is not an easy read as it confronts the issue of rape during wartime.

While this story does focus on the atrocities that happened to Cilka(and many others), it also shares the heroic efforts she was a part of. Cilka has a compassion for others that guides her through the toughest of times and this part of the story was both heartbreaking and utterly compelling. How Cilka chose to use the gifts she was given to help others was so powerful and a reminder of the beacon of light in humanity even in the most horrific of times. Highly recommend! ( )
