With all the loose ends, an epilogue or sequel would have improved the experience. ( ) BeautyintheBinding | Jan 1, 2020 | Though I wasn't on the edge of my seat as I read this suspense novel, I did finish it within twenty-four hours, which isn't the norm for me and books longer than novellas. My interest ebbed and flowed throughout this one, and the drawn-out, almost uneventful events from a bad guy's perspective dulled the pace more than they built the tension for me. But the shortness of the chapters leading up to the climax helped. This is a smart read, with its mix of science, danger, a little faith, and a little romance. The ending makes a sequel quite possible without strictly making one necessary. The waters off the West African coast are a menacing red, full of algae thick enough to stand on in places. In nearby villages, mysterious deaths start to occur--and the panic mounts. An American biological researcher, Avery Madison, is dispatched by his employer to piece together exactly what happened, having long feared an ecological disaster just like this could occur. He's had little evidence to go on before now, and what he finds in West Africa is rapidly disappearing. But Avery knows the danger hasn't disappeared--it has just moved on. When parts of the Caribbean start turning a familiar red right before hurricane season kicks into high gear, the implications are clear.
