"A handsome, beautifully produced compilation of meditations and exercises to inspire us to find joy and expand the ways we engage with the people and places, the objects and tasks we encounter in our everyday lives. Long-time workplace advice columnist for The New York Times, Rob Walker, draws from his annual School for Visual Arts course and from interviews he conducted with men and women from a wide range of disciplines, has designed 131 exercises and meditations to encourage and guide us in rediscovering joy and creativity in our lives. In a world ruled by distraction and increasing demands on our attention, it's never been more important to notice what matters to you. To stay eager, to connect, to find interest in the everyday, to notice what others overlook, these are skills that are both vital and delightful--and this gorgeously illustrated volume can help you acquire and hone these very skills. The short, playful entries that make up The Art of Noticing include "Look for Ghosts and Ruins," "Look Slowly," "Make It Art," "Compose a Personal Plaque." Here is a book that will provide inspiration to everyone, from the artist or designer developing an aesthetic to the techie looking to disrupt a new market. But, it will be its own joyful reward for anyone, in any walk of life, who takes a chance at noticing"-- "A handsome, beautifully produced compilation of meditations and exercises to inspire us to find joy and expand the ways we engage with the people and places, the objects and tasks we encounter in our everyday lives"--… (lisätietoja)

A wonderful little book of ideas on how to be more involved in this world. Some great, some fun, some strange, some I will never try ... but all valid, interesting, and worthwhile reading. Even if you choose not to use this book for the ideas on how to "notice", there's still some great reading on how other humans have navigated this life. ( )

This is one of the most impactful and helpful books I've read this year. I took my time working through it as an assignments-book or workbook, and transparently have more reading to go. (It's rare that I spend 7 months with a book that I didn't actually just abandon). But highly recommended in its message as well as sparking a different perspective on noticing and mindfulness that's helpful for anybody in any walk of life. ( )

Some great ideas here to help with inspiring creativity. Quite a few also that felt too similar to others. Good skimming, though. ( )

it's fine. a lot of little 500 word ruminations on ways to notice the world in new ways. It's neat to read a lot of different ideas, and lots of different people mentioned with their own approaches to this, like lynda barry. Ultimately, i skipped this before going to sleep

One of my favorite books for this year.
I had been looking for a book like this: instruction manual for a more wakeful meditation, a practical sequel to Ways of Seeing by John Berger, and a sympathetic view of observing the obvious. A companion to Burrough's essay Doing Easy. Something to remind me of William James' focus on attention. Or of:

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour

I had been doing similar exercises for a while, and wanted more of these. It's like practicing scales if you want to perform and exist in this world with more attention.

What did I not like... some of the exercises are really... "frivolous". Anything referencing John Cage, for example. But it's all good. I will just modify those, use them as inspiration. ( )
