A species that has no word for murder has a murderer aboard their spaceship! New York Times bestselling romantic comedy author Gail Carriger (writing as G.L. Carriger) brings you a light-hearted science fiction mystery featuring an adorable lavender alien and his human crush. ALIEN Tristol lives in exile. But he's built a life for himself aboard a massive space station. He's even begun to understand the complex nuances of human courting rituals. Detective Hastion is finally flirting back! MURDER Except that Tristol's beloved adopted home is unexpectedly contacted by the galoi - a xenophobic species with five genders, purple skin, and serious attitude. They need the help of a detective because there's a murderer aboard their spaceship. Murder is so rare, the galoi don't even have a word for it. Tristol knows this because he is galoi. ROMANCE Which means that he and Detective Hastion are on the case? together. "This is a fun, funny, sexy book, and I'm so happy it exists. It hits you in the feels, makes you laugh and cry, and makes you think about matters of family, kin, and the heart." ~ Bookriot Delicate Sensibilities? Nice. Cute and charming, even if the romance is going ridiculously fast. Technically, it's not instalove, since the two protagonists have had eyes for each other off screen for a while, but the minute they know from each other that they are interested, it moves along with a speed that would bowl you over. In addition, it's not really clear why they love each other, but the 2 characters are cute together, the whole gender thing is interesting if confusing at first, and it touches on some important themes (not only acceptance of relationships between all sorts of people, but also of life choices, in this case having children or not). So I had no problem whatsoever accepting the speedy relationship thing.

I hope the author will write another book about these characters. It seems to me there is room for development. Why are the Galoi dying out for instance? ( )

Well, I am delighted by Carriger's characteristic lighthearted smut, so I quite enjoyed this book. I also really liked the exploration of gender, sex, and multi-being relationships. Honestly, I love books that affirm identity and this one does a great job with it, even though there is a tragedy at the core. Tris' interactions with the cat were enough to make me love him unconditionally. The romance is a bit quick to resolve, but I think that's in order to have enough time to work a murder mystery in as well.

Re-read, having confused it with another book with a murder mystery on a space station and an inter-species relationship, and also in preparation to read the new tinkered stars series -- much smuttier than I remembered, and just as delightful a second time around. ( )

I wanted to like this book more. I was looking forward to reading it very much - I was expecting at least a 4 star read. It was sweet, insta-love, and fun, but nothing more.

It reminded me a lot of the Claimings series by Lyn Gala. It was too easy to draw parallels between the two books - both aliens were purple, they both made nests for their mates, they both had a thing about language, they both trilled when excited, and they both had natural lubrication ;) I loved the alien parts - the culture, the differences between them and humans, whole new concepts of being - but the connection between the MCs seemed trite and superficial at best. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with fluff, but it just isn't enough to make me really fall in love with the characters as I did in Claimings.

Maybe if there weren't so many similarities I wouldn't have been thinking about Ondry so much and I might have enjoyed it more. ( )

Going in, I wasn't sure what to expect. For the first few pages things seemed rather confusing as is often the case in a sci-fi story with aliens, spaceships, new worlds and in particular in a society where our gendernorms don't exist. However, once I was past that initial "what the what now" feeling, the story grabbed hold of me and didn't let go.

The author does a great job of handing out enough information to keep you informed without giving a huge info dump or leaving you floundering wondering wth is going on. As the story progresses you learn more and more until you realise you know everything you need to, even if she leaves you possibly wanting more, lol.

As always, the story has great characters. Characters that stand alone, ones I'd love to be able to go and visit, they are so multi-dimensional. The world building, a combination of familiar and utterly alien, is fantastic. I'd actually love to read more stories set in this universe. The mystery that needed solving was a great addition which added a lot of depth and created an understanding of this strange world that Tristol originated from, even if towards the end I suspected the outcome of it all.

I really can't recommend this enough. This is an author who knows how to play with her readers. Who knows which strings to pull to get (and keep) us hooked! Even if it's with slightly disturbing tenticle-like hair *grin*

*AUDIOBOOK*

As the servant of my own "wonderful feline creature, I absolutely loved the beginning of this book! And I fell in love with Tris right away... fluffy, living hair and bouncy exuberance and all!

A bit insta-lovey but that wasn't a deal-breaker for me. The only issue I had at the end of the book was that Mr. Montiguous seemed to have been forgotten! Poor little "wonderful feline creature"!

And once again, a smashing narrator elevated this book to top marks for me!

I really hope there will be more stories of the Galoi! ( )
