This is one of the best books I've ever read.Melinda the main character is so smart and observant.
Here she is talking about her family

I'm not pretty or smart or athletic. I'm just like them--an ordinary drone dressed in secrets and lies. I can't believe we have to keep playacting until I graduate. It's a shame we can't just admit that we have failed family living, sell the house, split up the money, and get on with our lives.

Giving thanks

The Pilgrims gave thanks at Thanksgiving because the Native Americans saved their sorry butts from starving. I give thanks at Thanksgiving because my mother finally goes to work and my father orders pizza.

She's in trouble over her grades.

the Battle is roaring at full pitch. Grades, blah, blah, blah, Attitude, blah, blah, blah, Help around the house, blah, blah, blah, Not a kid anymore, blah, blah, blah. I watch the Eruptions. Mount Dad, long dormant, now considered armed and dangerous. Mount Saint Mom, oozing
lava, spitting flame. Warn the villagers to run into the sea.

It's so far into the book before we learn what has happened to Melinda to take away her voice.

I can't recommend this perfect book more highly everyone who's been in high school should find something here to love. I hardly ever rate a book 5 stars, especially after only one reading, but this is a book I know that I'll read again and again.

This book is about a girl who is raped at a party before the start of her freshman year of high school. Her friends turn on her for getting the party broken up, but she never tells them about being raped. She goes through the year lonely and not speaking, but by the end of the year her art teacher has encouraged her to speak and she finally tells about what happened. This book is an incredible story of a girl finally finding her voice to speak up after her trauma. This book is definitely for older students in high school classrooms rather than a middle grades classroom, but it's a wonderful story for those looking to find their own voice. ( )

Trigger Warnings: rape and assault

Nobody wants anything to do with Melinda after she called the cops on a party over the summer. She can't talk to her parents because they've never really understood her. The safest place for her is to be quiet and alone. But, when she's in her own mind, memories of that party threaten to creep onto the service and she can't have them breaking down the walls she's built up. If those crumble and fall, Melina would have no choice but to speak.

This is a beautiful story of being shattered and broken and finding the courage to speak. This book did a good job at displaying the emotions that follow a traumatic event. It was a super quick read and the voice of Melinda as the narrator was strong. The depression was shown well as well as the disassociation Melinda dealt with. The formatting of the story really showed that.

This is a book I've had on my shelf for quite some time but never seemed to get around to it. I made it a goal this year to knock out at least some of my TBR Longtime Tenants, so when I didn't know what to read next, I gravitated towards this one. I knew this book had been challenged and banned in the past and I knew what happened to Melinda, but I wanted to know why it was being challenged or banned.

This book is written a bit simple, yes. It doesn't go into any crazy details. Melinda doesn't get on a soap box and scream about what happened to her. The student body isn't turning their backs on her because she "started a rumor". But, it shows the struggle a victim can go through after it's happened. Melinda was only fourteen! She was scared.

I think this book should be something teens read. Maybe it will help someone who went through it get their voice back. Maybe it will help this type of event to never happen again. Even though it was written in 1999 and nowadays a story like this would have more social media thrown into it, this book can still connect with teenagers and young adults. ( )

I read once in 8th grade, and again early this year. A wonderful book that portrays depression and trauma better than maybe any other that I've read, from the realistic voice of a young adolescent. ( )

3.5 stars
Speak is an important book and one of the first books (it was published in 1999) in the young adult genre to address serious issues such as rape, depression, bullying and criticism at school and dysfunctional families. While handling serious topics the author made Melinda's internal dialogue funny and very witty.

Some of my favourite quotes:
“I know my head isn't screwed on straight. I want to leave, transfer, warp myself to another galaxy. I want to confess everything, hand over the guilt and mistake and anger to someone else. There is a beast in my gut, I can hear it scraping away at the inside of my ribs. Even if I dump the memory, it will stay with me, staining me. My closet is a good thing, a quiet place that helps me hold these thoughts inside my head where no one can hear them.”

I cut class, you cut class, he, she, it cuts class. We cut class, they cut class. We all cut class. I cannot say this in Spanish because I did not go to Spanish today. Gracias a dios. Hasta luego.

“When people don't express themselves, they die one piece at a time. You'd be shocked at how many adults are really dead inside—walking through their days with no idea who they are, just waiting for a heart attack or cancer or a Mack truck to come along and finish the job. It's the saddest thing I know.” ( )

The plot is gripping and the characters are powerfully drawn, but it is its raw and unvarnished look at the dynamics of the high school experience that makes this a novel that will be hard for readers to forget.

In her YA fiction debut, Anderson perfectly captures the harsh conformity of high-school cliques and one teen's struggle to find acceptance from her peers. Melinda's sarcastic wit, honesty, and courage make her a memorable character whose ultimate triumph will inspire and empower readers.

Anderson expresses the emotions and the struggles of teenagers perfectly. Melinda's pain is palpable, and readers will totally empathize with her. This is a compelling book, with sharp, crisp writing that draws readers in, engulfing them in the story.

But the book's overall gritty realism and Melinda's hard-won metamorphosis will leave readers touched and inspired.

Laurie Halse Anderson's first novel is a stunning and sympathetic tribute to the teenage outcast. The triumphant ending, in which Melinda finds her voice, is cause for cheering (while many readers might also shed a tear or two).
