Stone Soup is the international literary magazine and website publishing writing and art by young people under the age of 14. Founded in 1973, we have published more creative work by children than any other publisher, selecting the very best from thousands of submissions every year. This volume of Historical Fiction is part of a series of books in which we bring together some of our young writers' finest work on particular themes. The 35 stories and poem in this volume were written by authors between the ages of 10 and 13, selected for publication in Stone Soup magazine. Since its beginning in 1973, Stone Soup has published art, poetry and short fiction springing from the imaginations of young writers and artists. For all of us, adult and child, one of the keys to a love of history is story. In this collection of historical fiction we range widely through historical periods and across continents. Past events are humanized and brought to life through the strength of storytelling, from the eruption of Vesuvius in Pompeii, to the voyage of the Titanic; from the building of the pyramids to battles of all periods-Hannibal and the Gauls, the Revolutionary wars, World War 2-and internment. Our young authors skilfully weave together fact and fiction to bring the events of the past alive, and relate them to their own lives and experiences. In the process we learn not only learn a little about historical events: in the weaving of the tales we also recognise the humanity and emotions of these people, separated from us only by dates and places. Turn these pages and step back in time with us.… (lisätietoja)

It’s a collection of historical fiction from young authors. I really liked the concept. I have a 9 year old I did read some of it with her but it may be more appropriate for older children. ( )

I won a copy of this book with the intent of sharing it with my 8 year old daughter who reads at a 4th-5th grade level. Seeing that the stories were written by 10-13 year olds (on average) I assumed the content would be appropriate for her, but I found it to be a mixed bag. While she loved the stories I allowed her to read, I found the subject matter in some to be too dark and/or mature for her (i.e. descriptions of death or violence). Even with selecting only some stories, there were still one or two she found too scary to finish. I love the concept of this book, I just wish they had been more focused to a particular age group (even young teenagers read much different content than 8-10 year olds can or should read). However, she loved most of the stories she read and I appreciated that they introduced her to some eras in history that she wasn't yet familiar with. I'm sure she will read the remainder of the book in coming years. ( )

Stone Soup publish stories written by children aged between 10 -13. This collection of historical fiction stories has been selected from the best stories published between 1985 - 2017. Some of these stories are so well written it adds and extra layer of amazement when you reflect upon how old the authors were when the stories were written. In my opinion the best stories are the ones that are a retelling of an event in the authors family history such as 'Homemade Crop Duster' or 'War Boy'. Such a great way to encourage young writers to pursue their talents. ( )
