Stone Soup is the international literary magazine and website publishing writing and art by young people under the age of 14. Founded in 1973, we have published more creative work by children than any other publisher, selecting the very best from thousands of submissions every year. The 41 stories and poem in this volume were written by authors between the ages of seven and 13, selected for publication in Stone Soup magazine. Since its beginning in 1973, Stone Soup has published art, poetry, and short fiction springing from the imaginations of young writers and artists. What could express the imaginative powers of our writers better than fantasy stories? In this collection our young authors take us to fantastical lands ruled over by dragons, wizards, and princesses, and reveal strange happenings in mythical castles, secret gardens, and magical forests. We meet powerful unicorns, wicked barons, handsome princes, mysterious strangers, fearsome creatures, and armored knights (male and female). From ghost stories to fairy stories, these tales on the borders of dreams and reality both fit the mold of the classic fairytale and break the rules with their unexpected turns of imagination. Come with us to be bewitched, bedazzled, and entertained: Once upon a time . . .… (lisätietoja)

I am a huge fan of fantasy fiction and of Tolkien in particular. The quality of the stories was very good overall, some definitely better than others and this did not correlate with the age of the child. It was fantastic to see the interest in fantasy is still alive and strong. There were clear influences both from traditional tales and more modern stories such as Tolkien and even the Twilight saga. Some of the stories seemed to be cut short and I really wanted a few more pages for the story to develop a bit further. I am going to see if I can find a child to review this book as well and will add to this review if I can. ( )

I'm probably just a cynic, but I had a hard time believing some of these were written by children. That's a testament to how good they were (and how jaded I am), but also made me wonder about whether the fact that they were written by young people makes somewhat mediocre stories seem better because you're just impressed that a child wrote it. I don't know the answers to all that, but this was an interesting read and did have several really great tales (and a few just okay ones). ( )

I gave this book to my nine year old niece who loves to read fantasy books. She said this book was pretty good. She said though with some of the stories it was obvious that they were written by other children. She has a very high reading level but i think overall she enjoyed the book very much. I think these stories were the best of the best.

This book contains a wide range of fantasy tales by young authors. They pull the reader into the creative imagination of youth. As with Grimm's tales, not all have happy endings but lessons are contained within them. A few appear incomplete and just stop short of closure, but just a few. The different cultural backgrounds of the stories served to broaden the reader's perspective that fantasy occurs in many lands. The stories also serve as inspiration to readers of all ages to explore becoming writers, to let our own imaginations become unleashed.

This was a charming selection of fantasy stories. In an collection like this, of course there are going to be some you like more than others, and of course that was the case, but overall this was just a bunch of great stories to read to my nieces before bedtime to give them ideas of what to dream about or to get their imaginations going. 4 out of 5 stars.
