Tessa is still coping with grief from the death of her husband in a car accident. When she learns that it was really murder, she is determined to find out who tampered with her husband’s car. She gets a job at a pizza restaurant, suspicious of the owner and his staff, and thinking that some person, or persons, are responsible. She finds out more than she bargained for, and there is more going on than she suspected. She also finds out her husband has a past she knew nothing about, and must now reconcile that unsavory news with her feelings about the husband she loved. It’s quite a story. Though it is the first in a series, and readers might not expect much more than a cursory mystery as the characters are introduced, this mystery lacks nothing. It’s a well plotted and an intriguing tale with more than one mystery, and peopled with characters who will feel like friends before the story is over. ( )

While at Barnes & Noble I noticed the second book of this series on a table with other summer reads. It looked like a fun and interesting series, especially since I love to bake and cook, I love cozy mysteries, and I have Italian heritage. I went to the shelves and got the first book (this one) so I could start at the beginning. I did enjoy this, although Tess is a little slow on the uptake sometimes, some of the conversations between people were a little odd (like they weren't "listening" to each other), sometimes it was TOO cozy (overabundance of cutesy to nauseating levels), and there was a lot about being childless, which I found tiresome after a while (I am childfree, so no children by choice, and can't relate well to protagonists who mourn not having children). I've also never read a culinary book where the person eats so little, especially when they are cooking all the time. I realize she is grieving and also learns a lot of secrets that could make one lose their appetite, but it was just a little weird for a book that is supposed to be so much about food. I will continue this series to see if it matures a little bit. It was a little like Tapas, Carrot Cake, and a Corpse, where it wasn't perfect and it was trying a little too hard, but there was something about it that spoke to me and I want to see where things go. Penne Dreadful by Catherine Bruns is the first in the Italian Chef Mysteries and the first cozy I’ve read by her. Although I’ve been eyeing up the Cookies and Chance Mysteries for awhile now…. one day!

The first thing I noticed when I opened the paperback was the line spacing on the page, which was double the usual paperback. This made me extremely happy! Just recently, I’ve noticed if I read a paperback I have to have very good light and it helps to sit by the window during the daytime. The words are just so tiny to my getting older eyes. But that was not the case with Penne Dreadful because of the extra spacing. That is just an extra bonus, but it inspires me to buy more books by Poisoned Pen Press.

Bruns did a wonderful job with character development for the first book in a new series. There were a lot of characters, but at no time did I get confused, which has happened in the past when a book has a ton of characters or the character’s names that all seem to start with the same first letter. I really enjoyed the relationship Tessa had with her cousins and look forward to visiting with them in the next book. And of course, the kitty, Luigi is adorable.
And Bruns descriptions for the restaurant, Tessa’s house, and the neighborhood was done very well. The perfect amount to make me feel like I could visualize the scene, but not so much that I became bored and started skimming.

Besides the murder there were other crimes to solve, including fraud and blackmail. This was highly enjoyable having so many things to figure out. I had the general idea of who the bad guys were, but didn’t see it all coming, and was really surprised by one of the characters turning out to be a decent person.

I will be reading more of the Italian Chef Mysteries, and highly recommend Penne Dreadful. ( )

Penne Dreadful is the first book in An Italian Chef Mystery series. Tessa Esposito is from a large Italian family and she is known for cooking up a delectable tomato sauce. She lost her beloved husband, Dylan five weeks ago and she has been holed up in her home ever since. When her cousin and police officer, Gino Mancusi tells that Dylan’s car had been tampered with, Tessa is determined to find out who committed the crime. As Tessa searches for the guilty party, we are introduced to a variety of characters (townspeople, Dylan’s co-workers, Tessa’s friends and family). I liked Gino, Gabby, Vince, and Justin. They enhance the story especially Gabby. Tessa also owns a tuxedo cat named Luigi. Tessa was a hard person for me to like from the way she acted in Penne Dreadful. She is determined to get answers no matter what the cost. We follow her as she makes enquiries and “sneaks” around looking for clues. Tessa is blunt when she asks questions and her snooping is not sneaky. Tessa frequently gets herself into sticky situations and takes unnecessary risks. I did not know if she had a death wish or was oblivious to the danger. I did not find some of the situations to be unbelievable, but, of course, this is fiction. I hope Tessa improves her questioning technique in future books along with her stealth. The mystery was multifaceted with red herrings, multiple suspects and a twist. Those who are not avid cozy mystery readers will be surprised by the guilty person’s identity. I thought Penne Dreadful was a slow starter, but the action does pick up in the second half of the book. There were repetitive details that could have been eliminated along with the foul language. I was surprised there was a love interest for Tessa so soon. I hope that the author will let the relationship progress at a relaxed pace. I enjoyed the descriptions of Tessa’s Italian dishes and there are recipes at the end of the book. Penne Dreadful has pizza pies, family meals, unexpected revelations, simmering sauce, suspicious suspects, and one determined widow. ( )
