Fantasy. Fiction. Romance. Return to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh's darkly passionate Guild Hunter world, where human-turned-angel Elena Deveraux, consort to Archangel Raphael, faces a new challenge that threatens the balance of the world. Wings of silver. Wings of blue. Mortal heart. Broken dreams. Shatter. Shatter. Shatter. A sundering. A grave. I see the end. I see . . . The world is in chaos as the power surge of the Cascade rises to a devastating crescendo. In furiously resisting its attempts to turn Elena into a vessel for Raphael's power, Elena and her archangel are irrevocably changed . . . far beyond the prophecy of a cursed Ancient. At the same time, violent and eerie events around the world threaten to wipe out entire populations. And in the Archangel Lijuan's former territory, an unnatural fog weaves through the land, leaving only a bone-chilling silence in its wake. Soon it becomes clear that even the archangels are not immune to this deadly evil. This time, even the combined power of the Cadre may not be enough . . . This war could end them all. Contains mature themes.… (lisätietoja)

I enjoy this series, but the prose is beginning to get exceedingly repetitive and it really takes me out of the story. I'm only a quarter of the way in and I've already lost count of how many times they've mentioned the fact that Raphael's mother left him bleeding in a field. I'm also pretty sure that if I put this book through a word cloud generator, the biggest one would be the word warrior. I'm listening to it on audio book right now and it feels like every 2 minutes something or someone is described as a warrior. ( )

Truly, I am going to spoil some parts of this book, so only read the review if you don't care, or like I tend to do, after you have read the book and want to see what others thought.

I loved the book, nothing to say that hasn't already been said. I have had this books release date plugged into my calendar and was so pleased to see such a weighty tome. It took me three separate reading times to finish it. Normally, I tend to devour an anticipated new release within hours.

I had a few fears going in that were cleared up, basically, I wanted to know if Elena was still an "angel", she was. No point going into the wing situation, just know it all gets resolved and everyone is happy. Of course there is the war going on, but we already know that they win. How could they not? But it wasn't without a major, major fight. People died, angels died, archangels died. Yup. I'll leave you with that. Spoiler that I am...

I also was kind of afraid that this would be the last book in the series. However, after finishing it I am pretty sure there is more for us. The Cascade and all that goes with it, the war, Lijuan and all of that gets tied up, but there are lots of new story arcs and loose ends to tie up.

Seems that Elena is no longer "barely immortal", when she woke up out of that chrysalis she gained 300 angel years to her life. So the worry's about her getting easily killed are no longer.

There is one thing that I am going to truly spoil, because no one who gets through this book will believe that it didn't happen. I was so sure, I was practically rolling my eyes in anticipated reaction. I was thinking I was so smart that the expected event would happen that I kept saying "come on already", but Illium did not ascend. There was the perfect time for it, another angel ascended (no one we really care about), but Illium stayed firmly on the ground in New York. My thinking is that this is going to happen in "his" book, which is a long time coming, and better be on the horizon. I would love to see him get his own book. Now do I want to see him in a complicated relationship with Aodohan (forgive the spelling if I got it wrong)or do I want to see him get with someone new? Nah, there is history between the two angels, and there needs to be a book exploring it. And it needs to have Illium ascend. My two cents.

One thing I didn't really like was the whole glossing over of Elena's family. There are no interactions between her and her father ( I really wanted to see something with them, especially since it was written that he tried to go to them while they were "napping" in the beginning) and she has a brief scene with Beth and her grandparents, and a few paragraphs with Eve. I really wanted to see more. Oh well, no time between the rising of the ancients, and Lijuan decimating China to recruit an army to storm Manhattan. Whateves.

Elena with her Guild Hunter friends was more than a laugh out loud moment. There was plenty of that going around. Elena had many great little one-liners and quotes. I highlighted a few favorites.

Hope you enjoy(ed) the book, because I sure did! ( )

2.5 Stars (because it was slightly better than book 11)

I am so disappointed. I will tell you upfront, I am discontinuing this series. I have flat out, no doubt about it, had enough.
Enough repetitive thoughts.
Enough with the unnecessary elongated scenes.
Wordy scenes that lead nowhere.
Repetitive dialogue.

Started out well enough then the repetition started with same thoughts we have been bombarded with over and over in the book #11.
Then it got better with actual action then back again to repetitive thoughts and dialogue.

What finally had me at my wits end was the 'Final Showdown' between Raphael and Lijuan.
It went on and on and ONNNNN.
With very little really happening. Just a lot of 'Blah, Blah, Blah'.
And the 'Blah, Blah' was where we were once again hit with repetitive thoughts. Every mundane thing you can think of was inserted. The only thing that wasn't inserted was when they clipped their toenails!

I don't know why Ms. Singh has done this to my favorite series of hers.
I don't know if she will write anymore of this series or a spinoff to this series.
Quite frankly, I just don't care anymore.

I am done. ( )

The Guild Hunter series has a really interesting story arc to it. I find all of the character's to be very intriguing even the ones that I hate. Nalini Singh can always be trusted to write a series that has engaging characters and a full and fascinating story. ( )

This episode in the Guild Hunter series was mostly a war story. It begins with Elena coming out of her chrysalis skin and bones and minus her wings but with her intelligence and personality intact...and with a few added extras. She and Raphael don't have a lot of time to get used to their new powers because Lijuan's plots and plans are coming to fruition.

The Cascade is causing all sorts of problem from ice in the desert to plagues of locusts and all sorts of other phenomena. Enough is happening that it is disturbing archangels who have been in Sleep and who want to stay there.

Between the battles and plans for battles, Raphael and Elena have some tender moments and some family moments. Illium's father is one of the Sleepers who awake which causes a lot of stress for him but reveals new strengths in his mother.

The story was filled with lots of action, love and betrayals, gains and losses. Fans of the series won't want to miss this one. ( )
