A beautifully observed and deeply funny novel of May Attaway, a university gardener who sets out on an odyssey to reconnect with four old friends over the course of a year. At forty, May Attaway is more at home with plants than people. Over the years, she's turned inward, finding pleasure in language, her work as a gardener, and keeping her neighbors at arm's length while keenly observing them. But when she is unexpectedly granted some leave from her job, May is inspired to reconnect with four once close friends. She knows they will never have a proper reunion, so she goes, one-by-one, to each of them. A student of the classics, May considers her journey a female Odyssey. What might the world have had if, instead of waiting, Penelope had set out on an adventure of her own? Rules For Visiting is a woman's exploration of friendship in the digital age. Deeply alert to the nobility and the ridiculousness of ordinary people, May savors the pleasures along the way--afternoon ice cream with a long-lost friend, surprise postcards from an unexpected crush, and a moving encounter with ancient beauty. Though she gets a taste of viral online fame, May chooses to bypass her friends' perfectly cultivated online lives to instead meet them in their messy analog ones. Ultimately, May learns that a best friend is someone who knows your story--and she inspires us all to master the art of visiting.… (lisätietoja)

Brief and relentlessly pleasant. While reading I felt like I should be wearing a cardigan with tissues in the pocket. If I liked cats I am sure I would have wanted one of those around as well. ( )

I enjoyed this author's first novel, The Report, and was excited to learn her new one was out in paperback. The cover - and the premise, to be honest - had me fearing it would be a little twee, but this is actually a real gem. It reminded me of Weather and Crudo - and, with its Moby Dick-style sections on trees, The Overstory. A timely look at isolation as the world gets more connected. I don't care what her next cover looks like - Jessica Francis Kane is on my must-read list. ( )

Thoroughly delightful! May Attaway is at a reckoning point in her life. At 40, she is assessing her quiet, unassuming life as a university botanist and a caretaker for her 80-year-old father. She envies those whose friendships come easily and make the decision to use some gifted time off to visit 4 friends from her past whom she has kept up with minimally. Two are from childhood, one is from college and one is from her graduate/landscaping study. She prepares wisely, reading up on classics that involve travel and friendship including the Odyssey and carefully contemplates hostess gifts and the best ways to be unobtrusive. She has a good deal of anxiety about these visits and the whole idea of starting and maintaining friendships. To say May is set in her ways is a kindness, but she is willing to change. Some of her backstory is involved in this trepidation as we learn about her mother, her challenging home life as a child and her estranged brother. May is capable of love, but she just doesn't know it or trust herself. A running theme through the book is her vast landscaping knowledge, especially about flowers and trees; she is also in the process of helping her father choose a memorial tree for the campus. The symbolism and meaning inherent in this is beautiful. And May is also cultivating a relationship at home: Leo is the shy owner of the restaurant she and her father frequent every Thursday. Travel always creates growth and May is no exception - by the end of the book she blooms and it is lovely to witness.
Notable quotes: "The variety of human creativity expressed in landscaping isn't always a pleasure, but it is a wonder." (20)
"...when do you work into a conversation the difficult details of your life? Am I supposed to give them all the information for their benefit, to explain my eccentricities? Maybe I should put up a sign? Yes. Let's all have signs up and down the street announcing our personal disasters and disappointments. That would be helpful, perhaps even neighborly." (29)
"You grow up thinking it's natural for the ones who love most to keep their distance. Love stands apart; love lets you come to it. This isn't wrong, exactly, but I wanted to learn how to stand closer." (66)
"Welcoming a friend into your life is like folding egg whites: it should be done gently and with good technique, leaving lots of air." (98)
"Perhaps a best friend is someone who ....holds the story of your life in mind. Sometimes in music a melodic line is so beautiful the notes feel inevitable; you can anticipate the next note through a long rest. Maybe that is friendship. A best friend holds your story in mind so notes don't have to be repeated." (250)
"Why do I like gardening? Because I worry I've inherited a certain hopelessness, a potentially fatal lack of interest, that I'm diseased with reserve. Making a garden runs counter to all that. You can't garden without thinking about the future." (258) ( )

Delighted to have given myself the gift of reading this novel about friendship and family, which has become like a friend itself. ( )

A problem: If you're in an airport on a moving walkway, and a strager glides by on the opposite walkway holding a book bag printed with a phrase you;ve been thinking about for months, how long will it take you to finish the sentence?
