A School Library Journal Best Young Adult Book of 2019 A YALSA 2020 Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers From William C. Morris Award Finalist S.K. Ali comes an unforgettable romance that is part The Sun Is Also a Star mixed with Anna and the French Kiss, following two Muslim teens who meet during a spring break trip. A marvel: something you find amazing. Even ordinary-amazing. Like potatoes--because they make French fries happen. Like the perfect fries Adam and his mom used to make together. An oddity: whatever gives you pause. Like the fact that there are hateful people in the world. Like Zayneb's teacher, who won't stop reminding the class how "bad" Muslims are. But Zayneb, the only Muslim in class, isn't bad. She's angry. When she gets suspended for confronting her teacher, and he begins investigating her activist friends, Zayneb heads to her aunt's house in Doha, Qatar, for an early start to spring break. Fueled by the guilt of getting her friends in trouble, she resolves to try out a newer, "nicer" version of herself in a place where no one knows her. Then her path crosses with Adam's. Since he got diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in November, Adam's stopped going to classes, intent, instead, on perfecting the making of things. Intent on keeping the memory of his mom alive for his little sister. Adam's also intent on keeping his diagnosis a secret from his grieving father. Alone, Adam and Zayneb are playing roles for others, keeping their real thoughts locked away in their journals. Until a marvel and an oddity occurs... Marvel: Adam and Zayneb meeting. Listened to about half of this book and I found it sweetly low key, and I liked the Dubai setting. But once I saw that it was going to follow the MS storyline in more depth, I let go of it. That's just a personal thing not to read books about disease, and thieves and con men. ( )

There's a lot here for other people, I think! It's charming and really sweet. I just know I'm going to constantly be distracted and bugged by Adam, so I won't take it any further.

I AM CRYINGGG. I finally finished a book. Damn that was a rollercoaster of emotions. FIrst of all I finished this one book in more than a month as no time literally and secondly Eid Mubarak to all my Muslim friends.
Now to summarise how I felt this book. I will start with the overall book then move on to characters.

The plot was amazing exceptionally written I am out of words. It felt like I have not read a book this sweet this clean in my whole life. I can not believe how have I lived so long without reading this book. This book sums up Islam and Islamophobia completely. The way Zayneb goes through life I can feel her symphatize with her and feel all emotions with her. S.K. Ali you are a phenomnal autor and I am going to read more of your books soon. This book is a real love story and the progress of love in this soooooo realistic love it. This book is a Marvel as it is something you find amazing even ordinary-amazing.
Some references that made this book my favorite were:
1) Islamophobia which is not exaggerated.
2) Pakistani references such as Nazia Hassan which I mentioned before and believe me I was soo excited on hearing her name that it felt like the book mentioned me ( )

For me, this book was an incredible window into the life of a Muslim American teenager, Zayneb, who is suspended from school after "threatening" her teacher Mr. Fencer, an Islamophobe. Zayneb and her friends Ayaan and Kavi have been tracking Fencer's online activity and are planning and hoping to get him fired, but Zayneb's suspension derails their plans (temporarily). Zayneb's Auntie Nandy invites her to come visit her in Doha, and on her connecting flight from London to Doha, Zayneb sees Adam for the first time - and he sees her.

Adam is wrestling with his own problems: he's been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and hasn't yet told his father or his younger sister, Hannah; Adam and Hannah's mom died of MS when Hannah was a baby.

What ties the two together? ("We keep meeting" -Hamilton) They each, incredibly, have been keeping a "Marvels and Oddities" journal for years, cataloging beautiful and strange things about their worlds. They are also connected through Auntie Nandy, who teaches at the school Adam went to, and was best friends with his mother.

Slowly, the two build a friendship, and work through the obstacles (self-made and otherwise) in their path ("This is a love story. You've been warned" comes after the dedication and before the first page). Islam is a big part of both of their lives, and a non-Muslim will become familiar with several aspects of the faith that are often lost in Western narrative.

"Trouble is part of changing things. Since when have you seen a trouble-free change for the better?" (Auntie Nandy, 313) ( )

This was fantastic, start to finish. One of my favorite YA contemporaries I've read in a long time. ( )
