"This un-put-down-able story has everything-a well-imagined post-apocalyptic world, great characters, incredible suspense, and, of course, the fierce love of some very good dogs."-Kirkus Reviews (starred) When a beloved family dog is stolen, her owner sets out on a life-changing journey through the ruins of our world to bring her back in this fiercely compelling tale of survival, courage, and hope. Perfect for readers of Station Eleven and The Girl With All the Gifts. My name's Griz. My childhood wasn't like yours. I've never had friends, and in my whole life I've not met enough people to play a game of football. My parents told me how crowded the world used to be, but we were never lonely on our remote island. We had each other, and our dogs. Then the thief came. There may be no law left except what you make of it. But if you steal my dog, you can at least expect me to come after you. Because if we aren't loyal to the things we love, what's the point'… (lisätietoja)

Received via Netgalley for review.

When I requested this book, I definitely thought it was going to be more juvenile than it was. The premise seems basic: someone kidnaps somebody's dog, they give chase, things happen. But Fletcher injected some true humanity and a sense of optimism, if not hope, in his writing that changes the feeling of the book. And all of the survival actions that Griz undertakes seem realistic and like things someone in that position truly would do (marking landmarks on the map, smoking rabbit, etc.) which helped with the realism.

Basically, human beings and dogs are going extinct because somehow 99% of the population went sterile/barren and died off. What few remain live off the land in small, isolated groups. Griz doesn't know how well off they were until a thief comes, drugs them all, and takes off with not just material things, but their only female dog.

There were some beautiful lines/ideas throughout (like the idea that dogs have stayed through our side for centuries, never turning their backs on us and always staying loyal and loving, and we dragged them down with us for it; that without loyalty and love in our lives, there's really no point to living), and the journal style was fine. Griz's relationship with John Dark was wonderful and touching.

The only reason this isn't a five-star review is because some of the foreshadowing was too heavy-handed and just too much in general. The reader always knows when something is going to go wrong or reappear because Griz will flat out say "but things were going to get worse" or "how could I know I would need this thing again soon enough," which got a little tiresome. Trust the reader a little! And, while I was pleased about it, the ending was a little too pat. ( )

It's slightly above "ok". It makes you curious enough to keep reading. But it's the sort of book that's always at risk of being put away for a week or two if you come across something more engaging. Also, there are some cheap shots; some passages are so obviously meant to make dog people cry that they fall flat. And there are a few silly nods to wokeness towards the end. Nothing too damning though, just clutter; and nowadays that's pretty much the only way to win a Hugo or a Nebula, so maybe we can cut the author some slack on that front. Finally, the ending feels a bit rushed. ( )

Dystopia has to be my top favorite genre of fiction. I am also a huge dog person, so dystopia+dogs= a book I couldn’t have passed up. It also equals a compelling and marvelous story that I highly recommend for fans of dystopia and adventure stories. ⁣
I won’t give away too much of the plot, because I want you to experience the journey alongside our protagonist Griz. Griz and his family live on a remote island near what used to be Scotland, long after society has collapsed and much of humanity no longer remains. A stranger appears and steals one of Griz’s dogs, and he and his other dog Jip set off after them into the great unknown. ⁣
This was not only a story of adventure but also survival, and one of hope. Griz’s sheer determination to get his dog back might have hard hearted readers scoffing at his immaturity, but I would have taken the same chance as Griz. The author’s writing left me feeling the same tension and terror as Griz sometimes felt, the same wonder as he discovered treasures of the past that we take for granted today (books, electronics, tools) Even knowing what I know now about the ending, I would not hesitate to return on this journey with Griz and Jip. Wow.

Anything else would just spoil the experience. ( )

A Boy And His Dog At The End Of The World by C. A. Fletcher is a story set in a post-apocalyptic world. Griz and his family live on a small island off the coast of what used to be Scotland. This world didn’t go out with a bang but instead faded slowly away, propelled by the fact that most humans became unable to have children. It is now hundreds of years later, and the few humans who are left live isolated quiet lives. Griz’s family are used to being just them, but when a trader comes to their island and then leaves, taking Griz’s dog Jess with him, Griz doesn’t stop to think but just immediately sets out with his other dog, Jip, to recover his stolen dog.

Thus begins Griz’s and Jip’s journey that takes them through the ruins of the old world. There are many new things to discover and plenty of dangers. Griz keeps a journal and carefully documents his travels and what emerges is a suspenseful, well imagined story set against a backdrop of crumbing ruins overtaken by nature. This isn’t a heart pounding, fast moving story but a well written, interesting tale of the love and loyalty that can exist between dogs and humans.

I was totally absorbed by this story and although some may find it too much of a slow burner, I relished the time I spent with Griz and Jip. A Boy And His Dog At The End Of The World was an absorbing read that leaves a message that kindness, loyalty and hope will guide one through many pitfalls. Yes, that, plus it is always better to have a dog at your side. ( )
