I'm not sure how to describe this book. Like many before me I have been deeply moved by reading it and praying over it. It is a book that has made me lose sleep - like no other book it humbles me to the dust that I am so spiritually feeble. McCheyne can, perhaps, best be summed up in his words, "It is not great talents God blesses so much as likeness to Jesus. A holy minister is an awful weapon in the hand of God." McCheyne strove to be like Jesus with a heart and mind only for the glory of God. I heartily recommend this book - and for those in ministry this should be mandatory! Are there any likeminded today? [Preface to Enlarged Edition] The publishers of this edition have asked me to furnish an Appendix, giving additional information on such points as the results of the Mission of Inquiry into the State of the Jews, and some brief reference to the friends mentioned in the note at the close of Chap. I. GLASGOW, July 1892
[Preface to the First Edition] In this Memoir ver much has been preserved of Mr. M'Cheyne's own words as well as feelings.
[MEMOIR] In the midst of the restless activity of such a day as ours, it will be felt by ministers of Christ to be useful in no common degree, to trace the steps on one who, but lately left us, and who, during the last years of his short life, walked calmly in almost unbroken fellowship with the FATHER and the SON.
[Appendices] Spared, by the good hand of God upon me, until now, 1892, when nearly every one of the eighteen friends who formed our morning-meeting have passed away, and having been urged to give some brief notes in regard to each of these friends, I shall try to do so very briefly, taking each in alphabetic order.
[Letters] MY DEAR FRIEND,--The very day I received you kind letter, I intended to have written you that you might provide some one to stand in my place on Monday evening next.
[Sermons, Etc.] It is the saying of an old divine, that God often orders it, that when He is in hand with the greatest mercies for us, then we are most of all sinning against Him; which He doth to magnify His love the more.
[Published] In December 1840 the Presbytery of Aberdeen appointed a committee to inquire into the revivals which had recently occurred in different parts of the country, or were taking place at that time.
[Songs] Within a vineyard's sunny bound An ample fig-tree shelter found, Enjoying sun and showers-- The boughs were graceful to the view, With spreading leaves of dee-green hue, And gaily blushing flowers.

This work contains copies of Bonar's Life of Robert Murray M'Cheyne and a collection of M'Cheyne's own works. It should not be combined with copies that only containe Bonar's Life of M'Cheyne.
