"Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a rare book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues--a bee, a key, and a sword--that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to a subterranean library, hidden far below the surface of the earth. What Zachary finds in this curious place is more than just a buried home for books and their guardians--it is a place of lost cities and seas of honey, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary learns of those who have sacrificed much to protect this realm, relinquishing their sight and their tongues to preserve this archive, and also those who are intent on its destruction. Together with Mirabel, a fierce, pink-haired protector of the place, and Dorian, a beautiful barefoot man with shifting alliances, Zachary travels the twisting tunnels, darkened stairwells, crowded ballrooms, and sweetly-soaked shores of this magical world, discovering his purpose--in both the rare book and in his own life"--… (lisätietoja)

A fantasy tale, celebrating the love of books, that mostly follows a young man's journey through a mysterious world. The story involves a lot of jumping around between characters in different timelines. All the stories are great and reads more like a connected series of short stories. There is very little plot, but this is made up with great writing. Overall it was a good book, it just would have been better if it was interconnected more. ( )

Zachary Rawlins stumbles on a book, Sweet Sorrows, in the University library that depicts a sanctuary for storytellers and lovers, and mysteriously, part of his earlier life. In pursuing the book’s history, he enters the world of the Starless Sea to fulfil his destiny, live his story, and enable future stories to begin.

I love the idea of a sanctuary for story lovers and tellers, the other worldliness of it, the world within a world that only certain people can visit. How stories are themselves composed of stories, how they overlap and entwine, influence and combine. It is this complexity and unfathomless that makes the book such an enthralling read. Personally, I found the book became more enjoyable once I stopped trying to understand how everything is related, who is good or bad, what the correct path is. Some of it slots together, other parts are permanently left dangling. There are so many threads and much like life they don't all get the same amount of space, or all wrap up neatly. Certain aspects have to be accepted otherwise there is a danger of getting side-tracked by questions, such as what is the significance of the honey sea, the bees and the owls?

I enjoyed dipping between worlds. The doors are like books, openings to another time and place, but physical rather than imaginary, making it feel more immersive. The characters seemed a little two-dimensional, so it was difficult to warm to them. At times I felt a little frustrated with Zachery and Kat’s game mentality as it felt like a distraction, I don’t feel it adds anything to the story, but it doesn’t spoil the book either. It did feel a little like a video game in the disconnectedness of some of the threads, but that is no surprise considering the author writes these too.

I did like the ending, I felt it was really apt for the book and slightly unusual, more like closing a chapter in a book, intimating many more stories to come. ( )

A story about stories!

Zachary Ezra Rawlins finds a mysterious old book in his university library, filled with a strange collection of disconnected stories — one of which is about him. Seeking answers eventually leads him to a secret underground library, a Harbor on the Starless Sea, where he discovers that the stories are not so disconnected as they seem, and there are more than a few grains of truth hidden within them.

This book is wonderfully enchanting, exciting, mysterious, romantic. An ode to stories and storytelling in all its forms! ( )

I...liked? this book?

God I don't know.
There were so many parts of this book where I told myself I was done. THIS was it, NOW I'm quitting.
And yet here I sit, finished and contemplating a re-read.

I think that this book will work well for certain people and terribly for others. If you value stories for being stories, you may like this. If you value books for imparting information or portraying plots, you may not.

Overall I would say that in a funny way, my journey with this book precisely mirrored the protagonist, Zachary's. We both started the book out unsure what was going to happen, but in some familiar territory. We both were excited when the first part of what appeared to be an adventure showed up. We both quickly got frustrated at the many, MANY unanswered questions, and the clues that just seemed to lead to more mysteries. We both didn't know what to think of any of these characters, nor hardly who they were. And I'll admit, every time Zachary looked at a fantastical, magical, plot revelation revealed as cryptically as possible from a mysterious almost stranger and said a flat "what?" I was a little more endeared to him. Because man, I'm sitting here saying "what?" too.

And then, right at the same point that Zachary decided that this was his life now and he would lean into it, I did too. The unanswered questions eventually became a coherent, if strange, magical world. The clues eventually circled back around, some of them MUCH later than I would have hoped. And the characters eventually endeared themselves to me as I learned their quirks and histories, piece by agonizingly tiny piece.

Imagine something for a moment: A romance between gods and a romance between mortals, interspersed with a mysterious organization plot, told with all the prose and coherency of Alice in Wonderland.
That's the closest I can get. ( )
