This novel does not have a typical narrative structure. Instead it is a series of vignettes that are like small impressionistic paintings that give you a sense of meaning and color but don't necessarily include all the details. The reader is left with insights into these difficult lives and an overwhelming determination from the narrator. The book ends hopefully despite all the sorrow and disappointment that comes before it. ( ![]() I wonder if this is how non-Asians feel when they read Asian-American fiction. I liked the stories well enough, but I get the feeling that I would appreciate them more if I shared Esperanza's cultural background. I wish I had actually read this one in school, and hadn't breezed through it all in a few days. It think it would have for a great classroom discussion. Great writing, great characters, and I loved the use of short vignettes. Really a collection of short-shorts and prose poems. Lovely reflections on growing up a poor immigrant in America. These vignettes are insightful and powerful. Cisneros packs so much truth into so few pages. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

This book tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, a young girl growing up in the Hispanic quarter of Chicago, whose neighborhood is one of harsh realities and harsh beauty. Esperanza doesn't want to belong, not to her run-down neighborhood, and not to the low expectations the world has for her. Capturing her thoughts and emotions in poems and stories, she is able to rise above hopelessness and create a quiet space for herself in the midst of her oppressive surroundings. Esperanza's story is that of a young girl coming into her power, and inventing for herself what she will become. No library descriptions found. |
