It’s a good book but yet, left me feeling kind of empty. But then again, maybe that’s the point. Abby and Elise’s friendship is not at all healthy, and it’s all just so strange. The writing is good, which made it enjoyable, but it’s so weird with all the Perren and the Rhizome. To sum it all up, good but strange.....but in a good way. (This review is as strange as the book!) Now, several years on, Abie is a common woman, and Elise is a starlet. Abie is nothing, and Elise is everything. After reconnecting at a reunion, Abie goes to basically live with Elise in her fancy house in California. Abie becomes obsessed because she just wants to be something else. The plot is intriguing and different from other books I've read. The characters are likeable and not likeable. It's a back and forth with this story. It's a dark psychological thriller that fans of the genre will enjoy. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review. What starts out as a relatively minor obsession with a former-friend-turned-Hollywood-star (keeping magazine clippings while living halfway across the country isn't particularly noteworthy) quickly turns into something stranger, more possessive, more bizarre once Abby shows up in LA unannounced and becomes part of Elise's life again. There's a slow slide from excitement and eager friendship, to subtle manipulation and possessiveness, to a sense of supreme arrogance and condescension as Abby's proclaimed devotion to the craft of storytelling gives her a sense that she is more deserving of the industry's attention than Elise. The inside look at Abby's mind is unnerving and fascinating, a glimpse at what's almost megalomania and sheer entitlement that seems the most natural thing in the world for Abby. I liked it in the end, while managing still to be uninterested in most of it. It's a weird way to feel about a book. I'd try another by the author for sure. (
