Get swept away in Erin A. Craig's mesmerizing House of Salt and Sorrows. As one by one her beautiful sisters mysteriously die on their isolated island estate, Annaleigh must unravel the curse that haunts her family. Be careful who you dance with. . . . In a manor by the sea, twelve sisters are cursed. Annaleigh lives a sheltered life at Highmoor with her sisters and their father and stepmother. Once there were twelve, but loneliness fills the grand halls now that four of the girls' lives have been cut short. Each death was more tragic than the last--the plague, a plummeting fall, a drowning, a slippery plunge--and there are whispers throughout the surrounding villages that the family is cursed by the gods. Disturbed by a series of ghostly visions, Annaleigh becomes increasingly suspicious that her sister's deaths were no accidents. The girls have been sneaking out every night to attend glittering balls, dancing until dawn in silk gowns and shimmering slippers, and Annaleigh isn't sure whether to try to stop them or to join their forbidden trysts. Because who--or what--are they really dancing with? When Annaleigh's involvement with a mysterious stranger who has secrets of his own intensifies, it's a race to unravel the darkness that has fallen over her family--before it claims her next. House of Salt and Sorrows is a spellbinding novel filled with magic and the rustle of gossamer skirts down long, dark hallways. Get ready to be swept away.… (lisätietoja)

Loved this book all the way till the end. The last couple chapters seemed to lack what the rest of the story gave. I was expecting something mythical to happen, but it seemed rushed. Like the author had to hurry to finish the book by a deadline. That being said, House of Salt and Sorrow was still a great read. I'll recommend it to anyone looking for something new. ( )

Apparently, "House of Salt and Sorrow" is a retelling of the Brother Grimm's fairy tale "The Twelve Dancing Princesses", a fairy tale of which I was not aware. Given it is a Brother Grimm's tale, one can expect it to be dark and goth. The retelling certainly delivers on that aspect!
On Erin A. Craig's version of the story, three of the twelve sisters have died and the fourth dies as the story begins. There seams to be some kind of a curse on the Thaumas family, given the pace the family females lose their lives. After their mother died, about 6 years ago, the daughters have been following her leaving the impression of a cursed family. The Thaumas have been mourning for so much time and they still have to mourn for the fourth sister. Everyone things that they should be avoided. They don't need that curser or whatever it is to be shed upon them.
Annaleigh, one of the Thaumas sisters, does not believe that their family is cursed or that the latest death of her sister Eulalie was an accident or a suicide. She is certain that it was a murder and she is determined to find her sister's killer. In the meantime huge changes happen at Highmoor, the family estate. Annaleigh's stepmother is pregnant and her father decides to put a stop to the family's mourning and throw a ball. The mourning clothes and shoes are burned in a bonfire and new happy clothes and fairy shoes are provided to all the sisters. Annaleigh doesn't agree with that, but she backs off in order to make her father family. After all he deserves to have some happiness again in his life. Apart from the new clothes and shoes, new experiences come to the Thaumas sisters, as they find out about a passage used by the Gods to travel wherever they want. This way the sisters start travelling and attend balls, where they dance all night having a great time and looking for suitors, ones that have not yet heard about the curse.
The dark element is so intense in this story. The shadows larking in the dark. The sisters that have died. The unclarity behind the last sister's death and the stepmother in the picture are only some of the clues that should have the reader prepared for what is coming. Taking also into account the different Gods that the people in the book worship, it becomes clear that we should be expecting something related to those Gods. And there is connection to them, not only with one of the Gods that makes the story more interesting. Strange as it is, the Gods are actual and go among the mortals, which is not the usual God behavior.
The beginning of the story was kind of slow and not so exciting. It was all about fairy tale balls and dancing and beautiful dresses and shoes, which is nice. Thankfully I kept reading and then the creepy things started. From the youngest sister drawing her dead sisters in her sketch book and claiming to see them, to the so vivid nightmares Annaleigh starts to have. Then the climax came and it became all so much more interesting and intriguing.
"House of Salt and Sorrows" is the debut novel by author Erin A. Craig. That being said, one can understand that her writing needs some more work and practice. For sure though she has some really good ideas!

Annaleigh lives in her father's manor by the sea. Highmoor used to be a happy place. But since the death of her mother and four of her sisters, there is talk of an evil curse targeting her family. There was once 12 sisters....now only 8 remain. When Annaleigh starts having visions about the deaths not being accidents, she starts to realize there is something sinister at work.

I loved this story! Creepy, disturbing yet mesmerizing! Great read! I couldn't put the book down. I ended up reading until the wee hours of the morning because I had to know the ending! So glad I did. This was the best YA fantasy book I've read in quite awhile! Erin Craig is a talented storyteller! The ending wasn't a total surprise...but there were still many twists and turns in the tale.

House of Salt and Sorrows is Erin Craig's first book. I can't wait to read more by this author! The cover art is fantastic!!

Holy smokes, Batman! I had no idea what I was going into with this book. I thought it was just your standard fantasy YA novel. But there were a lot of horror elements, and they were expertly done. Several moments in the book gave me actual chills. If you enjoyed the Netflix interpretation of the Haunting of Hill House, you’ll enjoy this book. They have nothing in common, like at all, so it’s a weird comparison to make, but they both had the same atmospheric tension throughout. I can genuinely say I didn’t predict the ending. Well. Sort of. But for YA that’s a big deal. ( )

House of Salt and Sorrows was a haunting story that I'll likely never forget. I loved the seaside setting and the rituals the townspeople followed. They believed in and prayed to gods I'd never heard of before, and I enjoyed learning about them. Annaleigh shared a few stories that her mother told her as a child, and they were easily some of my favorite parts of the book. I only wish we'd gotten to learn more about the various deities that existed in their world.

This book was delightfully eerie, and I honestly had no idea what was actually happening most of the time. I started to second guess what was real and what was imagined. It reminded me of the movie Inception, because it really messes with your head! Are they dreaming? Are they dancing? Are they dead? Are they dangerous? Annaleigh is thrown into the middle of something inescapable, because it's her mind and memories she can no longer trust.

My one quibble would be the romance and how quickly they fell in love with each other. It wasn't overtly an insta-love, but their relationship did progress quickly and with some intensity. They didn't really know each other and both had secrets they were unwilling to share. Eventually those came out and they started working together, but they still fell hard and fast for someone they barely knew (and in a situation most people would've wanted to avoid). The lies were explained and understandable, but the YOU'RE MY ONE TRUE LOVE FOREVER was a tad too much for my liking. I don't think Annaleigh would have survived without him though, since he had information she needed and was willing to risk everything to keep her safe and alive.

I really loved how the author messed with my head, despite guessing who the real culprit was before the characters had figured it out. The explanation was unexpected, so the author still managed to surprise me at the end. It was also a lot more gruesome than I was expecting. People were left bloody, broken, mangled, and some of the descriptions were gross. Maggots crawling through carcasses, and the body parts of old fish being unknowingly consumed, nearly made me vomit.

If you're looking for a story that will make you second guess yourself and the characters you're reading about, then House of Salt and Sorrows might be a good fit for you! However, if you have a sensitive stomach, or an unwillingness to be disgusted by a book's content, you might want to look elsewhere. Craig delivers a mind-bending story that focuses on family and what they'll do to survive, whether they're battling grief, ghosts, or gods. (★★★★☆)
