I haven’t read those books yet, and I’m glad I read this book first. Cops and Comix is a fast read. The author does a good job of injecting quirky humor, which comes through at the very beginning when Alex finds a dead body. It’s instant lust for Alex and James when they set eyes on each other. The relationship development is quite fast because of the short story format and there isn’t much depth or complication within the relationship. This book is just meant as a very brief introduction to two characters that appear in Books One and Two of this series. Alex and James seem suited to each other and I can see them as a convincing couple. What I noticed right away with the writing, was how each paragraph created its own brief scene that fleshed out the events of the story. In other books I’ve read by this author, she had time to embellish what happened because the books were novel length. I liked how precise and succinct the author was with her writing. Despite the difference in writing styles between the short story and novels, I was still able to identify with the characters. There were no paragraph separators for pov changes mid-chapter, but I didn’t have any difficulty figuring out whose pov I was reading. I have to mention there isn’t actually thirty-eight pages of ‘story’ material in this book. As is common with Dreamspinner publications, the last ten or so pages, advertises the author’s other books, and various books put out by other authors in the DSP stable. In reality, that still doesn’t include the pages, such as Table of Contents etc, at the beginning. I would say there’s about twenty pages of actual story in this book. Overall, I enjoyed this cute, fast read and give Cops and Comix, 4 Stars. The one thing I dislike, and that’s for all the DSP books, is the amount of wasted pages DSP puts in for ads at the end of all the stories they publish. I find the ads annoy me more than they get me to buy any more books. This ARC copy was given to me for an honest and unbiased opinion.
