Penn They say revenge is a dish best served cold. I'd had four years to stew on what Daria Followhill did to me, and now my heart was completely iced. I took her first kiss. She took the only thing I loved. I was poor. She was rich. The good thing about circumstances? They can change. Fast. Now, I'm her parents' latest shiny project. Her housemate. Her tormentor. The captain of the rival football team she hates so much. Yeah, baby girl, say it-I'm your foster brother. There's a price to pay for ruining the only good thing in my life, and she's about to shell out some serious tears. Daria Followhill thinks she is THE queen. I'm about to prove to her that she's nothing but a spoiled princess. Daria Everyone loves a good old unapologetic punk. But being a bitch? Oh, you get slammed for every snarky comment, cynical eye roll, and foot you put in your adversaries' way. The thing about stiletto heels is that they make a hell of a dent when you walk all over the people who try to hurt you. In Penn Scully's case, I pierced his heart until he bled out, then left it in a trash can on a bright summer day. Four years ago, he asked me to save all my firsts for him. Now he lives across the hall, and I want nothing more than to be his last everything. His parting words when he gave me his heart were that nothing in this world is free. Now? Now he is making me pay.… (lisätietoja)

No one writes a poor little rich boy/ girl story that actually makes you feel for them like LJ Shen, and I will not doubt her again.

Daria Followhill is not perfect. She has real demons, and they drive her to make several questionable decisions that result in her feeling unworthy of real love and respect...which leads to more hard decisions and vulnerable situations. I found myself yelling at her like a girl in a horror movies ("no, no, don't do it, you know what will happen, you know better!") She doesn't always learn from her mistakes, and sometimes she even deliberately goes against what she has learned. But she does grow a LOT in the book, and I empathized with her situation. there was never a time I didn't understand where she was coming from, even if (I would like to think) I wouldn't have made the same decisions.

Even though he's not exactly innocent himself, Penn agrees that she's not perfect, and isn't afraid to tell to anyone who'll listen just that (though he'd use much stronger language to do so). It's those very low expectations that make Daria feel safe enough to drop the mask she shows the world and let him see her, and even though neither of them want it to happen, sparks fly. We definitely get the requisite All Saints hot hot hot hookup scenes in this book! In addition the smoking chemistry between them, Penn soon becomes the only person who actually knows the real Daria, and then the only person to call her on her bs when necessary. He is able to push both her and the people in her life to gain some perspective, and start to thaw ice queen Daria enough that she can make better-for-her choices when people come for them and their relationship.

I'm not sure how much self-reflection Penn did before moving in with Daria. He's an alpha protector first, and that leads to some cringe-worthy decisions of his own before he is forced to revisit some of his initial perceptions and judgements of who should be at his side. We still like him though, because he learns and once he knows her, he never gives up on our girl Daria.

Let me just say that the characters in this book were HIGHLY entertaining. Daria, (outwardly) spoiled brat and popular kind-of-mean-girl and Penn, broody football hero with a chip on his shoulder were so different but their inner monologues were both so deliciously snarky, I found myself chuckling at my kindle as I read like a crazy person. Daria's relationships with her parents also really drew me in, and IMO, stayed true to the characters we got to know in Defy, in good ways and not-so-good, but always authentic. L.J. Shen also did a great job of writing layered, three-dimensional primary and secondary characters and drawing parallels between very different socioeconomic backgrounds, highlighting that millionaires aren't always lovable dicks and poor underdogs don't always have hearts of gold...but sometimes, they are and they do. Overall, highly recommend. ( )

Is there anything that this author cannot write?

Every book that this author has written I have gobbled up as if her words were cheese and I was the mouse. Her gift with words is truly the stuff of legends. She is the Babe Ruth of writing and while there are many in the game she is the true MVP. It doesn't matter what the genre she writes she picks up the gauntlet and runs with it. This book was just another example of hitting a grand slam.

To say that I have been looking forward to this story would be an understatement. At first, I wasn't sure if it was because I just loved the men of All Saint's High so much that I didn't want them to ever go away. Gradually, it became so much more. The teasers and anticipation had me needing to know answers. In particular, how could the child of my favorite Hothole (Jaime) have a daughter such as Daria? Entitled I could see but a mean girl. Never. This story breaks it down. I loved the glimpses of the hotholes and especially Jaime and Mel again(because let me be frank I LOVED them and anything about them is food for my soul) but I really loved watching the dynamic between the kids. The kids remind me so much of their parents. Which again, surprised me considering that Daria could be a mean girl. Yet, she is so much more than that. This story reminds me that not everything is as it seems and not always is the grass greener on the other side of the fence.

I found myself reading certain chapters from various perspectives, (Melody's in particular at a time I REALLY needed to understand her actions concerning her daughter--nice touch to the author on this one) and would find myself so caught up in the moment that I later realized that I had tears sliding down my cheek. Who can do that? This author can it seems. This is a story filled with angst, betrayal, and heartbreak juxtaposed with butterflies, redemption, and love. In a nutshell, this story blew the others out of the park. I say that with every LJ Shen book but this one felt different. The hotholes might have been the start of all this (literally and figuratively) but these kids are going to leave them all in the dust.

Daria and Penn were perfect. Truly perfect. They will make you fall in love while simultaneously break your heart. They will remind you that sometimes not everyone is your enemy. They will also make you see why there was something so precious about the movie Lady and the Tramp. I was right to love Daria even when others were quick to misunderstand her. People tend to lash out when they are on the defensive.

I recommend anyone that reads this to be prepared for a bumpy ride. It will be rough but trust me when I say the wait for this book was worth it. I cannot wait for the next book, if what is think is happening with Knight, Luna, and Vaughn then I am one happy girl. ( )

Wow I finally made it to the end of this one and I really did not enjoy it. I think some of that is my fault. I'm clearly in the minority with this opinion and I haven't read any other L.J. Shen books and I probably should have started with the first book she wrote in this universe. That being said, I also think the plot wasn't great and the characters were mostly bad. I thought about giving up on this book multiple times, even though it isn't super long.

I thought the plot of this book was all over the place. I don't mind romances that have a lot of drama happening, in fact, I prefer them to books that are just fluff. However, this one was just too dramatic for me. It was really hard to picture any of this happening to high school students. I'm pretty willing to suspend my disbelief, but in this case, there was just too much going on for me to do so. At times it seemed like none of the characters acted or talked like they were actual high school students. High school students do not talk like these characters. I think sometimes people are too harsh on authors who write high school characters making bad decisions or having sex, but those are things that do happen in high school. The things that happen in this book do not happen in high school, or they at least don't all happen at the same high school. For example at the end of the book, Penn reveals that Gus' mother is a sex worker (the book uses the term whore). Everyone around them started booing and giving Gus the thumbs down. That image was so ridiculous to me, I almost laughed out loud. . I only recently left high school, so I have a pretty good idea of what goes on and this book just took unrealistic to a whole different level.

I really didn't like how virginity is talked about in this book. It's discussed as if it's a gift that should be saved for a particular person. I kind of get what Shen is going for with that and I don't mind romance authors using someone having sex for the first time as a plot point. I think someones first time can be really important to them and I can absolutely understand that. However, this book treats virginity almost as if it was as actual tangible thing (to the point of objectifying it as the necklace Penn gives to Daria) when really it is just a social concept that is frequently given too much importance.

I didn't mind the guy in this couple, Penn. He was a bit too demanding and possessive for me if he existed in real life, but I do know that's what I should be expecting in this sort of romance, so I was mostly fine with that. I cannot say the same about Daria. I thought she was annoying the whole time. The switch in her character to become a better person felt very unexplained. She was whiny the whole time. I hated reading her perspective because I found it so annoying. Also, the trope of an evil two-faced friend of the female love interest who clearly has some disordered eating and tries to bully everyone else to eat like her is a surprising common one in high school romances and I'm getting really tired of it. I especially don't like it when there is no discussion of the pressures that lead girls to have eating disorders. Esme talks about the reasons for her disordered eating at the end of this book and gets absolutely no sympathy which happens in many other stories with similar characters and is starting to bother me.

I really did not like this book, but there were parts of it that I thought were good and parts where I liked the writing. I probably will read another L.J. Shen book at some point because I have heard better things about some of her other books but this one was definitely a miss for me. ( )
