"I have always felt," William Shatner says early in his newest memoir, that "like the great comedian George Burns, who lived to 100, I couldn't die as long as I was booked." And Shatner is always booked. Still, a brief health scare in 2016 forced him to take stock. After mulling over the lessons he's learned, the places he's been, and all the miracles and strange occurrences he's witnessed over the course of an enduring career in Hollywood and on the stage, he arrived at one simple rule for living a long and good life: don't die. It's the only one-size-fits-all advice, Shatner argues in Live Long and..:What I Learned Along the Way, because everyone has a unique life--but, to help us all out, he's more than willing to share stories from his unique life. With a combination of pithy humor and thoughtful vulnerability, Shatner lays out his journey from childhood to peak stardom and all the bumps in the road. (Sometimes the literal road, as in the case of his 2,400-mile motorcycle trip across the country with a bike that didn't function.) William Shatner is one of our most beloved entertainers, and he intends never to stop entertaining. His funny, provocative, and poignant reflections offer an unforgettable read about a remarkable man.… (lisätietoja)

With self-deprecating humor, William Shatner gives his readers his take on how to live, at least how he did it, and how to face aging and beyond. He talks about the things that shaped his life, including, when a boy in school, sending Valentines to himself so he wouldn’t be the only one not getting some. (Those were the only ones he got that year.) He advices to be open to opportunities and to say yes, even if you are uncertain you are able to do what is asked. His memoir is permeated with his feelings of loneliness and how he coped. He talks a bit about his marriages, but more about his beloved dogs and horses. He advises never to quit work, or if retired, to work at things that mean something to you, even if it’s a volunteer job. And he speaks of death, and that he will rage against it with all he’s worth. He speaks openly of other things he has done, and the regrets for the things hasn’t, holding little back. This audio version is narrated by Shatner himself, and it is hard to believe he was 87 when he performed it. He sounds ageless. ( )

This is a very enjoyable read, written in a relaxed, conversational style. More than any of the other books and memoirs written by Shatner over the years, this one seemed, to me, to be the most personal and honest. He tells many stories from his life over these past 87 years, many of which I have never heard before. This memoir is so impressive that I feel, after completing it, that I know him personally. ( )

In this memoir, William Shatner shares his feelings and experiences about life, work, religion, relationships, adventure, health and wealth. In his always-humorous tone, he describes his unusual life and what worked for him, reminding the reader that each person needs to find what brings him or her joy in life.

I enjoyed learning a bit more about this very interesting man who just doesn’t quit. However, parts were very drawn out and boring. Because of this, I have a mixed review. I like the man, but the book is not my cup of tea.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. ( )

By far the most honestly written of William Shatner's autobiographies. Having written many books over his lifetime, and having read most of them, usually they are punctuated by a fair amount of humor and ego. This book was not. It truly is a discussion of William Shatner's philosophies about life and about change. To me, his most important point is "Say yes to life". He also told several painful stories, including his deep remorse at not knowing why Leonard Nimoy shut him out of his life at the end. An honest book with some wisdom found over his lifetime in it. Road trip! 2,500-mile round trip taking my daughter to college and driving back alone calls for a whole lot of audiobooks. (5 of 7)

Shatner waxes philosophical about life and death at 87. I found nothing real deep or profound here as he bandies about advice and old adages that wouldn't be out of place in Polonius' speech in Hamlet. I probably would have given this two stars in book form, but I'm just a sucker for Shatner's voice, and the audiobook was good, calming company during a stressfully rainy portion of my drive. ( )
