What is it?
This graphic novel is also a memoir, What I think is especially fascinating about this read is that the author is also the illustrator. Starting at a very young age, Krosoczka expressed a passion for art, specifically comics and cartoons. As you read the author’s life story, you also see him express himself and his family members through his own drawings. Krosoczka’s memoir reflects on his struggles growing up in a nontraditional setting. His mother battles with addiction through the story, and his father is absent from his life until Krosoczka’s later teen years. Because of this, he is raised by his grandparents and often feels different from his peers because of it.

Should you read it?
YES, like right now! There is not another book like this out there, at least not that I've found yet. I would recommend this book for 7th grade on up since there are references to drug use and drug addiction. Younger readers might not understand some of the references or why the author feels the way he does at times. Because Krosoczka does experience so much, this is a great read for developing empathy and diversity. The story is nonfiction and even includes copies of notes from the author's mom and other pieces of nostalgia to illustrate the author's life and passing of time.

Spring 2020 / HS Book Club;

The book everyone was sent home with after Christmas, I decided to open and read this a few days ago, and accomplished it pretty quickly. One hour in the evening, and then one hour the next morning, and I'd flown through the graphic novel.

This is a bildungsroman-memoir (told in graphic novel format) about family and addiction, about loss and gain, about rebellion and realization. I don't really love the art pallet or the art style, but it's far better than some things I've stuck through (as I always herald in honestly that my aesthetic wants, especially where it comes to comics or art books are *incredibly high*).

But it was a great choice concept-wise and I can't wait to discuss it with the kids in two weeks. ( )

This is author-illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka's memoir of his childhood. He was raised in Worcester, MA, adopted by his grandparents, because his mother could not raise him as she was either in prison or a halfway house, convicted of crimes to support her heroin addiction. His grandparents provided a loving home, but they were hardly model roles for him. Jarrett's only escape was art, his next-door neighbor, and several teachers along the way, who provided much needed support, especially classes at the local art museum, when school funding for the arts was slashed and joining the high school newspaper as the cartoonist at parochial school. His reunion with his unnamed father and half-siblings at the end was heart-warming as were his several postscripts. The graphic format was well done. ( )

Fabulous! Krosoczka deals frankly with the difficult issues (and people!) from his childhood, but offers hope that good things can grow from imperfect beginnings. His visual portrayals of his family members are poignant and sharp, as well. ( )

adult/teen graphic memoir (growing up w/absent dad; absent, heroin-addicted mom; alcoholic but supportive grandma; and an aging and also supportive grandpa; while learning to draw comics) ( )

In this deeply vulnerable, moving graphic memoir, Krosoczka, well known for his popular Lunch Lady series, recounts his sometimes troubled childhood, spent largely with his grandparents; his struggle to maintain a relationship with his heroin-addicted mother; and his gradually developing love for making art and comics. His grandfather officially took custody of Krosoczka when he was not yet five years old, and it wasn’t until much later that his learned about his mother’s heroin addiction and imprisonment. Life with his grandparents—a hard-drinking couple who bickered constantly—wasn’t always easy, but his grandfather was a stalwart supporter of his artistic aspirations, and he slowly realized that the atypical family he ultimately collected (even eventually his father, whom he finally met late in his teen years) could be enough. Krosoczka’s brushy, expressive artwork, incorporating snippets of his childhood drawings and letters, beautifully conveys the difficult circumstances of his upbringing. There’s a tender quality to his graceful line work and muted color palette, which adds to the compassionate way he depicts his family, even when he can’t count on them. A closing author’s note fills in additional backstory and helpful context, including the ultimate, heartbreaking result of his mother’s addiction. There have been a slew of graphic memoirs published for youth in the past couple of years, but the raw, confessional quality and unguarded honesty of Krosoczka’s contribution sets it apart from the crowd.
