Minus the other stories part, I read this as part of a multimedia Sunday in which I absorbed this and both filmed versions of the tale. One of the three is a masterpiece. This is not that, but it is a perfectly servicable action-western magazine-size tale. The names are terrible, and and even if the only thing the 1957 movie did was rename the characters, it would have been an improvement. ( ) Well I really enjoyed both movie versions - the 1950's Van Heflin and the 2007 or so Crowe and Bale - the latter being superior IMHO and one of the better westerns. So when I discovered this was base upon an Elmore Leonard book I acquired it and was really looking forward to reading it. Okay, I should have read the description to find out it was a short story as I found this out after reading it for a short time I thought hang on this is nearly at the end. It indeed was! So the bare bones of the movie versions are there but very superficial and quite disappointing. Even as a short story it just was inadequate. So watch the movie versions but skip this book! This is a collection of short stories in the "western" tradition. As a fan of Louis L'Amour, I expected something similar to Louis' stories, and while each story had an interesting plot with developed characters, they were and yet were not the same as classic Westerns. For one, Elmore Leonard doesn't always let the reader know what will happen, but leaves the epilogue to the imagination. There are twists in the plot, too. I really enjoyed these stories, and plan to read more by this author. My first Elmore Leonard, and while I had heard that his writing style was rather pointedly minimalist, I found it so sparse that a couple times I wasn't even sure what had just happened. But I seemed to enjoy the later stories more than those earlier in the book, which may indicate there was a bit of a 'learning curve' to reading his work. Once I got into the stories, it seemed like there was often a small twist at the end that made me think, "THAT was the point of this story?" Different than a lot of short stories I've read in that the twist was so distracting that I didn't wonder what happened to the characters at all; it was almost like the twist completely erased all that had gone before, so I didn’t have any unresolved tension. I don't like feeling manipulated by modern short stories, but I guess I do like the unresolved tension that leaves me thinking about them long after I've stopped reading. For that reason, some of these stories missed their mark for me. Still, I'd probably like to try a novel by Leonard. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
